| jaybee8107's Full Review: Cynthia Voigt - Homecoming |
This story, Homecoming, written by Cynthia Voigt, was a great, story.
I originally bought the book for a Book Report that my English teacher mandated us to do by the due date, or our Report Card grade would be lowered one grade. I decided to continue with the book report, what other choice did I have?
Upon coming into the book, (The first 3 pages) the book was quite boring, and I was thinking about taking it back to the store, for an exchange, since I had not (Yet) abused the book. I had time, since I had a month to do this Book Report. I figured that these were just a couple kids, that were left in the mall, and they had to find their way back home, because it was an emergency. Boring, I thought, until the action (Barely) started to happen.
These kids were left in their mom's old station wagon, left alone, in the crowded mall parking lot, when their mother promised to come back, but after hours, she didn't. So, they decided to go in after her, since the doors were still open. Some kids stayed in the car, but the rest went in the mall. If I can recall correctly, there are 4 Tillerman children, Dicey, the oldest girl, and one little boy, named Sammy. Tee rest, I cannot recall. They eventually found themselves all alone. They were supposed to go on a trip, but they made this stop at the mall. They were lucky that their mom packaged food (Sandwiches) for them, otherwise, it wouldn't work out. They continued to live in the mall parking lot, for the days to come, but eventually, they ran out of sandwiches, and their drinks. Since the car was no longer habitable, they began to trek off, using the map that their mother had in the car. Dicey knew where some relatives lived, so she just followed the map there. It wasn't like she hadn't been there before. Their father had left them years ago, alone with their mother. The children lived in a small house, next to a lake, and beach, which they loved.
On and on, they made this trek, it took them weeks to make it. They would sleep in abandoned, and not yet constructed homes, make friends with helping children and adults, and make homes in the woods, away from people, so they wouldn't draw attention. Dicey would work, so they wouldn't go hungry, she kept her family together, always. They experienced things that may have torn the family apart, but thanks to her strength, they all stayed together.
They eventually found themselves at their grandmother's house, a huge white house with Red shutters (If my memory serves me correctly) She denied her grandchildren, and Dicey would offer to work for their home. She eventually gave up on trying to deny her grandchildren, and enrolled them in school. She found that she loved her grandchildren.
As for their mother, she was found... It was known that she had just lost her mind. I guess all the stress finally caught up with her. That part of the story was really sad.
Oh yeah, I forgot. They did live with an aunt, on the way. She didn't like children, and Dicey didn't feel comfortable around her, so they did trek off again, to their grandmother's house.
Overall, a great book, something that I would read again, and since I'm broke, no money for a new book, I think I will...
