Pros: Quiet, 4-cycle,
Cons: will not idle, consumes more fuel than any 2 cycle I've had,
Our engine has less than 100 hours on it. The paint is peeling off the cover. The impeller has been changed out because of overheating which turned out to also be a bad thermostat. We've detected gasoline in the crank case oil. Crank case oil leaked all over from I don't know where on one of its returns for repairs. Yes it was right side up. The throttle has jammed up multiple times. It either won't rev up or when it does you can't slow it down coming into the dock. Just recently the prop hub has spun out on it and we haven't hit anything. The Honda dealer says he sees about 8-10 a week!!! Isn't a shear pin there for a reason.
The fuel consumption is worse than any small outboard I have owned...all 2-cylces go figure. We don't have a cold start problem, if you really pull hard. However unless the engine has run for 5-10 minutes it won't stay idling unless you continually twist at the throttle. The idle speed is appropriate.
My next outboard will not be a Honda, though they make great cars and vans. The Tohatsu we had on another boat was faultless and others have reported the same. For now we keep oars in the dinghy as our backup.
