| sophiesdad's Full Review: Honeywell Deluxe 5-2 Day Programmable Thermostat -... |
My old programmable thermostat (Rite Temp) began developing problems. I live in South Florida and the A/C is on most of the year. Although August was a hot month, I noticed that at one temperature, the house was freezing. Turning it up one degree, the house was intolerable. Hoping that the problem was a faulty thermostat and not replacing a central A/C unit, I decided to invest in a more trusted name (Honeywell).
Programmable thermostats usually are priced according to the number of features and programs available. This Honeywell model offered a backlit display (invaluable at night) and one program for weekdays and a second one for weekends. More expensive models offer programs for individual weekdays and/or weekends.
Setup was a breeze. The installation manual was well laid-out with step-by-step instructions with individualized warnings and/or workarounds for various types of HVAC systems. I had the unit installed and running within 20 minutes - start to finish.
Another convenient feature is that the unit can be removed from the base plate and programmed in the convenience of a chair rather than having to stand in front of the thermostat. Though I read the instructions for programming, the interface is completely intuitive in its design.
The best feature that I found is that Honeywell has built into the unit a program that keeps the surrounding air consistent. My constant complaint with previous thermostats (including the conventional mercury switch models) was that there was a point at which the A/C or heat would continue to run even when the target temperature was reached. This resulted in an uneven sense of comfort.
The Honeywell unit, however, keeps the ambient temperature extremely constant. Finally, in the event that outside temperatures require an override, you can temporarily override the programmed temperature simply by pressing the up or down buttons. The override will remain until the next programmed temperature change. If, for example, you happen to be home during the week because of a holiday, you can set a temperature and press the "hold" button which will cause the target temp you set to remain until you remove the hold by pressing the resume program button.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES: • Separately programmable weekday/weekend schedules. • One-touch temp control overrides program schedule at any time. • EnergyStar® compliant to greatly reduce your heating/cooling expenses. • Large, clear, back-lit display is easy to read — even in the dark. • Displays both room temperature and temperature setting. • Removable battery holder for fast, easy replacement. • Built-in compressor protection.
A quick reference card folds and slips conveniently into the unit so that you can re-program without having to search for a manual. A toll-free number and website are available for installation assistance.
Unit has a limited one-year warranty.
BOTTOM LINE: You can certainly purchase a cheaper model of thermostat, but the few extra dollars are well-worth the features and quality of this unit. Honeywell has done a credible job of designing an attractive, easy-to-install/use unit that will keep you comfortable for years to come.
