jrrglobe's Full Review: Honeywell 50250 Air Purifier
When an anti-allergen furnace filter isn't enough you'll want to consider this one-room air purifier. The results are dramatic. My wife has allergies, and we buy micro-allergen filters to help, but sometimes its just not enough. So we bought this air-cleaner.
We have two cats so the allergens are abundant in our household. We leave it running on high all day in the room where we spend the most time at night. The air is noticeably fresher, and easier to breathe. But best of all, my wife's allergy symptoms are nearly eliminated. At first I was skeptical, but this thing really works!
For the first few days this purifier will emit an subtle oder like burning rubber. It will go away. The manual mentions this, but doesn't explain why it happens. The cleaner is also very loud. It has low, medium, and high fan settings. We can notice the difference in air quality if we keep it on high, rather than low all day. There is definitely a compromise between air quality and noise. We just run it on high during the day and turn it to low at night.
There are two filters. The main filter is a HEPA filter. The other is a "per-filter." The pre-filter is a fine mesh that catches larger particles like cat hair, extending the life of the HEPA filter that catches the allergens. The HEPA filter is pretty expensive to replace, but if you replace the pre-filter every couple of months you can extend the life of the HEPA filter for up to a year. This is obvious when you remove the pre-filter for the first time.
