Dionne25's Full Review: Hoover U5750-900 WindTunnel Bagless Upright Vacuum
Last September, when Chris was done with his summer job in the Alaskan bush, we went on a little shopping spree. That summer job brought in a lot of money and we were able to get a few important items for our apartment. So, off to Wal-Mart we went and did some shopping. We knew we needed a vacuum for our tiny one-bedroom apartment, and after looking around, we decided to purchase the Hoover Windtunnel Bagless U5750-900 Upright Vacuum.
I was a little skeptical (as I always am) for a number of reasons. The first was it seemed rather big for our small apartment. Next, I thought the price was a little too steep for my taste ($240 to be precise). However, with Chris, his philosophy is that when he buys something, he buys the best and when it comes to the best, you have to pay for it. So, I did my little girlfriend bit and said OK, and we also bought additional canister filters (an additional $20-$25) for the vacuum.
One of the main reasons for buying the vacuum was that we were going to have company over (one of our first overnight guests and we really needed some appliances and furniture in our apartment). But that's for another time.
OK, on to the features. The vacuum itself is quite large. At times I thought I would get lost among it with my 4'11" frame. The handle was easy to assemble (according to Chris). I have to admit, I wasn't around for the assembly as I was out running errands. There is a small compartment that holds extensions for the vacuum, including a few brushes of different sizes. On the right side of the vacuum is the hose and it also includes additional attachments for those hard-to-reach areas in your home.
Other nice features about this vacuum include the extra long cord that wraps around the side of the vacuum. I found this to be a big plus because you plug it into one outlet and you could practically go anywhere in the house without having to unplug the vacuum. On the actual floor part of the vacuum are the different height levels that you can choose depending on how high your carpet. It ranges from very high to hard-wood-floor. This vacuum also included a HEPA filter and wed heard many great things about HEPA filters. Plus, I have allergies and this would help with filtering the air when vacuuming, so we felt we were getting a good product.
All the buttons are easily accessible. The on/off switch is on the handle; the foot release is on your right side and with the touch of your foot, the vacuum quickly goes from vertical to horizontal in seconds.
OK, it's got all these great features, but does it do the job you ask? Well, initially, yes. After being in that apartment for about 4 months and not being able to vacuum, on that first go around, we really took notice. The carpet itself wasn't very attractive; it was a nasty brownish-beige with some hints of red. Dirt practically hid itself within the carpet. After giving the apartment the royal treatment (we vacuumed the rugs about 5 times), we were impressed. We even used it on the floor in the kitchen and the dirt seemed to disappear.
We did find there were some drawbacks to this product. It seemed to burn a lot of energy when the can was about half full. The vacuum would smell as if it were on fire or something and this happened each time the can was half full. We kept it clean from top to bottom, making sure there werent any little dustbunnies or other foreign objects in the way of the vacuum, but for some reason, it would give off that smell. We just found it to not live up to the potential we hoped it would.
We couldnt return it because it was past the 90-day store policy and Im sure we could have sent it back to the manufacturer, but seeing that we were getting ready to move, we did the next best thing and sold it. We actually sold it pretty reasonable at $120 and if we were to calculate the depreciation value (ooh my business skills are vibrant), we felt that was pretty fair. The new owners were pretty excited about it, too.
Overall, we started out being happy with the Hoover Windtunnel Bagless U5750-900 Upright Vacuum, but ultimately we may not purchase this particular product again.
