graukatz's Full Review: Hoover U5750-900 WindTunnel Bagless Upright Vacuum
Bought mine at Sears, brought it home tonight. Had to find my screwdriver to put it together, and a large nail to poke a hole where one should have been to get the handle on. Didn't know this would be a preview of things to come.
Ran it over the carpet. Looked like it was picking up more carpet fiber than dirt. Tried the nifty little turbo hand attachment with its own little brush that runs on the air being pulled through the vacuum. Back to the carpets awhile later and as I'm bringing the handle down there is what seems like an unusually large plastic breaking kind of snap.
Later I decide to try the hand turbo thingy again, only this time I notice the brush isn't turning. On closer inspection I find that there is now much less suction through the hose.
Good thing the screwdriver was handy, I suppose. But after an hour of poring over the manual looking very carefully at the mechanisms in the thing I discover that a broken plastic bracket that was supposed to hold a spring that operates a valve to redirect suction through the hose when the handle is upright (hope you followed all that) was the cause of the loud snap as it broke.
Upshot is that the unit now thinks the handle is never upright, so the hand attachments are useless.
Major design flaw. Haven't decided yet whether to get a replacement or go with something else.
Also the big brush turns constantly, even when you (attempt to) use the hand tools. Adjusting it for different levels of carpet or bare floor is by this somewhat clumsy little lever closer to the floor than the handle.
On the positive though, it seems the filter designs are well thought out. The two final filters are small and truly washable, unlike what I've found in my Fantom.
Emptying the cannister is more than a bit of a mess. Would recommend doing this in the garage.
So if you want to take a chance on a bad design or don't need the hand tools, this one should be ok.
