The Bottom Line: In conclusion take your time in deciding which vacuum to purchase. I've learned that just because it is the most expensive doesn't necessarily mean it's the best.
CHughett's Full Review: Hoover U5750-900 WindTunnel Bagless Upright Vacuum
My husband and I went to Wal-Mart about a year ago to purchase a new vacuum.
My very first vacuum which we purchased after we were married three years earlier was about to die. Our previous vacuum had a bag that was hard to find so we decided to look at the bagless vacuums.
The Hoover WindTunnel looked incredible to me. It is bagless with a hepa filter. My four-year-old son has allergies and we have a dog and cats and a whole lot of dust that accumulates. We also would never have to worry about replacing a bag or hunting the exact size down at the store. There is also a lever on the front that allowed you to raise and lower the bar for deep down dirt. The on/off switch was within reach at the top of the handle and when the handle was released the vacuum reached underneath small spaces.
Perfect right? We bought it. I have never spent over $250 for a vacuum before, but with all the perks I thought it would be well worth it.
We brought it home and plugged it in. I vacuumed our most 'lived in' room first. When I was finished, the canister was completely filled with dirt. It was amazing. The floor that I vacuumed everyday was covered with ground-in dirt and dust. I happily continued through the rest of the house with the same results.
The vacuum continued to work well for about three months, then it stopped having that wonderful suction power. My husband checked it for a clog, but nothing. We then decided that maybe the hepa filter needed replacing and went to Wal-Mart to purchase a new one. $50!!!! I was shocked and decided against replacing it. Instead I took it outside and cleaned it with the hose.
As the months went by the vacuum began to fall apart. The bottom bar kept falling out because the plastic that held it on broke.
Then after about six months the darn thing started shutting off in mid-vacuum. I looked it up in the manual and it said that if there was clog of any kind that it would automatically shut off. My husband took the whole thing apart, cleaned out a few clumps of dust and put it back together telling me it was fixed. I turned it on and two minutes later it shut off again. It began to take me over three hours to sweep one room. I would have to turn it off, let it cool down for about 20 minutes and then go again for two minutes. It was crazy.
It got to the point where it would not pick up dirt it would just throw it around the room. When you turned it on a giant cloud of dust would fill the room. Then I would have to dust the furniture. I began to hate the $250 vacuum that I thought was so great.
One day I had enough so I set off to Wal-Mart again to buy a vacuum. This was less than a year later. I purchased a $40 vacuum that had a bag. I have had it for three months and even though I have had to replace the bag twice now, at least I can sweep the whole house at one time.
Never again will I spend that much money on a vacuum that only lasts a year. The two "cheap" ones I have bought in the past have done better and lasted a whole lot longer.
I will admit that I am hard on a vacuum. I use it daily and I have two toddlers that are always making messes. I am not rich and I am still sick to my stomach to think that I spent that much money on a non-lasting product.
I recommend the Hoover WindTunnel to those who do not have a dusty home, (I live on a gravel road) and for those who do not over use their vacuums, and for those who don't mind spending a small fortune. For all other stay-at-home moms, such as myself, go for the cheap one. At least when you have to replace them every year it will only cost you $40. It would take you five years to equal one WindTunnel.
