Hormel Compleats Chicken Breast and Gravy with Mashed Potatoes - Not my favorite.
Written: Aug 23 '10 (Updated Feb 16 '11)
Pros:Convenient, inexpensive, low in calories and fat.
Cons:The taste. And the sodium. But mostly the taste.
The Bottom Line: I like the Hormel Compleats line of microwavable meals. But I don't care for this flavor.
I like many of the varieties in the Hormel Compleats line of microwavable meals. Other than a higher sodium content than I'd really like, most of the varieties are tasty, low in calories and fat, and ultra convenient. Sadly, I don't love this variety, the Chicken Breast and Gravy with Mashed Potatoes. The chicken is a bit tough, and the gravy uninspired. Considering how high the sodium is, I find the entire meal to be bland.
The line, itself, is unbelievable convenient. These meals do not require refrigeration and can keep quite a long time in the pantry. That makes them very convenient - you can toss a few in your desk at work, or in a briefcase, and always be 90 seconds away from a hot meal.
Yup, that's all it takes - 90 seconds in the microwave, and the meal is always hot.
Removing the plastic film can be a bit challenging, at times. And sometimes, that challenge has resulted in hot gravy being splashed. So use caution.
Like I said, I normally enjoy these meals, but this particular flavor will not be making a repeat appearance in my house. The chicken pieces were a bit tough. There was plenty of gravy, but it wasn't anything exciting. And, when mixed with the potatoes, I found myself looking around for salt and pepper shakers. Not a good thing. Considering how high the sodium content of this meal is, one really shouldn't feel the need to add more salt!
Speaking of nutrition, the 10 oz. meal gives 200 calories and 3g of fat. That's really not bad at all. The sodium, however, is high - 950 mg. That's a lot for a 10 oz. meal. As bland as this product is, I just don't understand how it can possibly contain that much sodium!
The first few ingredients are rehydrated potatoes, chicken breast with rib meat, water, wheat flour, chicken fat and chicken gravy mix.
As for me, I won't be buying this particular variety again, although I'll continue enjoying this line of meals. Super convenient, cheap (on sale, frequently, for $2), and mostly delicious, this line of meals is a winner for me. But not this flavor.
