I'm on my own for now. Hubby works in a different state and commutes . When he isn't home I have to come up with something easy for dinner. I noticed Hormel Compleats Turkey and Dressing in Walgreen's recently. For only $1.99 it was great price wise, it said you could make it in 90 seconds (Wow!) and the size (10 oz) of the package looked like a perfect one person meal size.
Hormel has been in business since 1891. I took it home and since it's been chilly lately I decided this evening would be a good time to heat and eat. I slid it out of the cardboard wrapping and read the directions.
Directions:Puncture the plastic cover on the white oval container after removing it from the cardboard sleeve. Put in microwave and heat on high 1 1/2 minutes (90 seconds). I decided to go one minute and add more time if necessary. Let stand one minute. There is a little tab on the white film covering to help peel this off. Be careful, watch for steam. You can also place the unopened meal in a pan of boiling water and simmered for 8 – 10 minutes for those who do not have a microwave.
I did all this (cooking only one minute). Took it to the table and opened it up. There was no great aroma but it looked okay. You see a lot of brown gravy, thick and glossy over some slices of pink/white turkey layered on "stuffing".
The turkey is very soft and can be cut with a fork. It's nice and tasty. Nothing here tastes greasy or fake. The stuffing was a bit soggy and I left most of it. I never found any water chestnuts but I did see what I think was a wee bit of celery. The gravy was tasty enough, certainly not like your Grandma makes and the meat was just fine.
I'm not sure why they mispell the word completes (they sell it compleats). It catches your attention I guess because of the misspelling.
The sodium content is over the top, very high, the sugars are relatively low. I wouldn't give it high grades on flavor but it was okay. Considering how high the sodium count is I didn't find this particularly salty. This would probably be a passable meal for a college kid stuck in a dorm. It isn't something I would purchase again. Considering the price I really can't complain. I ate some of it.
It's 280 calories for the entire portion. The dogs will enjoy the rest tomorrow on their kibble if I can pick out the onions (poisonous for dogs).
The container is recyclable and also has some storage or craft potential so that's a small plus. I think going for take out would be a better idea.
