Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer - Not my #1 Choice
Jun 29, 2001
Review by Mark Dakhlian
Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Does the job in killing these pests.
Cons:Toxic and sprays in a sloppy, "foamy" stream somewhat less than the claimed 20 feet
The Bottom Line: While Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer did serve it's purpose, I was disappointed the claimed spray distance was very overstated. Not my #1 choice.
I’ve been lucky, only being stung a handful of times during the course of my life, but it appears my luck ran out the other evening while reaching into my sprinkler valve box. I tried Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer for the first time because it was the only available product that was carried by the local ACO store, to rid our yard of the pests that stung me 5 times when I accidentally invaded their space.

Why Buy Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer?
My first choice would have probably been Raid’s Wasp & Hornet Killer as I have used that product a number of times in the past. Unfortunately, as I previously stated, it was unavailable at the small local hardware store I stopped. Since I was in a hurry I purchased Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer. I decided to give this product a try for several reasons. First, I liked the claim that Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer can be applied from distances up to 20 feet away. Since I had just been nailed 5 times the previous evening, no distance really sounded safe but I sure liked the idea of a 20-foot head start. The claim seemed reasonable since the comparable Raid product I used in the past seemed to perform as well. Additionally, the Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer also claims to work on a variety of other pests including:
Brown Dog Ticks
As well as Hornets, Wasps, Yellow Jackets and Bumble Bees
I figured the remaining contents would then come in handy because the list of pests around our yard is endless and most of those listed have been a problem at one time or another. Oh, and the third reason for my purchase was that I would now have a new product on which to write a new Epinion.
How and When to Apply
The first thing you will want to do is read all directions and warnings carefully. Before spraying, be sure to shake the can well. Holding the can in an upright position, spray directly into the nest’s openings, followed by a complete soaking of the entire nest. Apply Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer early in the morning or late afternoon to early evening when most insects are inactive and in their nest. Wait at least 48 hours before removing the nest, allowing time for all the insects to return to the nest and die.
Precautions and Health Warnings
- It is suggested to keep spray from plant foliage. Should spray get on foliage, rinse the plants with water.
- I have not personally tried, but it is also suggested to keep spray off asphalt shingles and vinyl or plastic as staining of these materials may occur.
- Keep pets and children away from the treated area until the spray has completely dried.
- Avoid using this product when windy and avoid inhaling.
- This product is highly toxic – Keep away from birds, fish and other wildlife. Do not spray near lakes or ponds since Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer contains Diazinon.
Comparisons To the Raid Spray – Should I Buy the Ortho Product?
The answer to this question is definitely yes and no, but probably not. As far as cost, the Raid product was purchased for $4.99 for the 17 oz size and this Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer was bought at a cost of $4.96 for the 15 oz can. The reviewed Ortho product will eliminate those pests just as the manufacturer claims. The one caveat I will leave you with is that Ortho may have been overzealous when they made the claim this product will reach nests up to 20 feet above the ground. The only way this product will hit a nest 20 feet above the ground is if you are on an 8 to 10 foot ladder! The spray stream from this can appears more dispersed and “foamy” than the stronger “hose-like" spray that is emitted from the Raid product. If you are concerned with keeping a distance from the nest, then I strongly suggest the Raid Wasp & Hornet Spray over this Ortho product. If you are fighting a variety of insects in addition to Hornets and Wasps then you may well prefer the Ortho Hornet & Wasp Killer as you will find any Diazinon product highly effective.
