So who is this George Hornsby anyway? He puts out a ‘Premium Quality’ Hard Apple Cider. His pet Rhinoceros graces the label of this ‘Authentic Pub Draft’ but we are granted no story about the man himself. After searching the label for a website (none found) I noticed in very small print and very inconspicuously placed is the mark of EJ Gallo Winery in Modesto, CA. Gallo’s website has no info about this product either. Oh well.
Hornsby’s Hard Apple Cider is one of those drinks I keep around the house for my wife to enjoy occasionally while I’m enjoying a beer or two. I decided to sample one for myself tonight and was a little surprised at its drinkability.
The Package
This product is sold in 12 oz green glass bottles with a wide bottom and exaggeratedly long neck. The six-pack I purchased set me back $5.99. The labels colors are blue and gold mostly, with some green accents. An advisory on the label suggests this product be served ‘extra cold’. ABV is advised to be 5.5%.
The Pour
Almost clear. A very pale champagne color and look due to the many bubbles racing to the top of the glass during the pour. After the bubbles subside it looks exactly like apple juice. No head is established and just a touch of lace graces the surface but that doesn’t remain for long.
The Nose
Apple cider – literally. There is absolutely no alcohol smell at all. You can not tell the difference between this and regular old apple cider. Sweet, thick and mealy. Like standing in an apple orchard.
The Taste
Initially you just get a very carbonated mouth-feel. The taste is pure apple cider with no alcohol. A strong green apple taste. Even the aftertaste is identical to regular apple cider. Amazing. The only thing stopping you from guzzling the whole glass at once is that strong carbonation feel. That, and the warmth in your belly tells you it’s alcohol. The flavor lingers long after your done drinking. Like a thick coating of apple cider was left in your mouth – just like with regular cider.
Last Thoughts
I’m surprised at how smooth I found this. This is definitely one to watch out for. At 5.5% ABV I can imagine this sneaking up on you. Putting away a six of these by yourself just wouldn’t be significant until the alcohol caught up with you. Look out Mimosa – you’re not the only acceptable way to catch a buzz before noon anymore!
