It’s easy to buy gifts for my three year old. He’s obsessed with Hot Wheels and Match Box cars. My husband got the idea to get him one of the many Hot Wheels sets that either fit together or can be played with on their own. The first set we got him was the Hot Wheels Super Highway Play Set.

What Is It?

The Super Highway is a gray, figure 8-shaped road complete with signs, a car, and a tollbooth. The other available sets can be snapped onto it to form a village. We usually see them for around $7, which is what we paid.

Details

While the gray track pieces are very sturdy plastic, the signs and stoplights are very thin and flimsy and he’s already broken a few pieces. The signs’ posts, or bases, that hold them up are very thin in diameter and easily snapped. Here are some of the items in the set:

*Straight and curved snap together track pieces- These become the figure 8 shape complete with ramps that form a hill.

*2 signs indicating the on and off ramp

*Orange and blue tollbooth

*A toll collector which is so small that he’s been misplaced

*Stoplights

*Streetlights

*Traffic signs

*Numerous stickers you must place

*Trees

*Posts to hold up the ramps

The Good And The Bad Points

My son loves to play with the set. I’ve never set it up myself but it’s quick and easy for my husband to set up. It included a diagram but he never has to use it now and sets it up within minutes. At it’s longest point, it’s about 18” long and when taken apart, can store easily in the small plastic bin where we store his cars.

The stickers are a bit tedious to place. Some are very tiny. He has picked off several, including some of the ones that make the lines on the highway.

Some of the pieces are so small they are difficult to find. It may work better to store them between uses in plastic baggies. They could be a choking hazard, too, if you have small children. The trees have already been broken since they were as flimsy as the signs.

Although it’s recommended for ages 3 and up, obviously, some three year olds will not treat it well and may break various pieces. I would still consider buying more parts to the Hot Wheels town even though the sets are not perfect.
