Hotel 31, is an excellent bargain.
On our last visit to New York (Valentines Weekend, 2003) I wanted an inexpensive (less than $100 a night) hotel in New York City, that would be convenient to the action (broadway, tourist attractions, etc.) but admittedly, cost was my first factor.
I found Hotel 31 on-line at various discount hotel sites (hotels.com, hotelrooms.com) (as well as its own website hotel31.com)
Its rate was $60 for a room with double bed with shared bath, cable TV, hairdryer, air conditioning, telephone, and sink in room.
My wife was concerned about the shared bath, but all worked out well.
There are 2 bathrooms per floor (we were on the 7th floor) and I think there were 5 rooms sharing the 2 bathrooms.(but it might have been 5 rooms per bath!)... but bottomline.. we were only inconvenienced once, over 4 days when both happened to be occupied (and in that case, if you were desperate, you could walk down 1 floor! to the next 2 baths!) There was plenty of hot water for my morning shower.
Our room was tiny, with about 3.5 feet at the end of the double bed (where a small desk, and 13" tv was), and 3 feet on one side of the bed. There was an airconditioner in the window (but this was winter) and an electric radiator (which we could not adjust and it was on all the time)
(to regulate the heat, since the air conditioner was very loud, we opened the window above the air conditioner about 6 inches, and that made the room perfect)
I'm not sure what cable package the hotel had, but I was unable to find CNN which I like watching, although I did find a good all news local channel. There were probably about 25 channels, but about 5 were shopping channels!
Maid/Towel service is provided, and when we requested more towels from the main desk, the towels arrived in about 3 minutes!
The Location of the hotel is excellent. A quiet section of 31st street, between Lexington and Park Ave.
It is about 4 blocks from the Empire State building, and an easy walk to Broadway (south of Times square). We entered the subway 2 blocks due north at 33rd St, or 3 blocks due south at 28th St, and were on the 4/5/6 line (one stop uptown to Grand Central, and from there the "S" line 1 stop over to Times Square.
Private bath rooms are available for about $40 more (around $100) and the summer shared bath rate is apparently higher around $85.
For an inexpensive stay in midtown Manhattan, I can highly recommend Hotel 31, which though not right "in" the action, is close enough to the action that you are not inconvenienced
