| cshell76's Full Review: David Baldacci - Hour Game |
Two of David Baldacci's best characters, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell (Split Second), return as partners in Baldacci's newest novel. Sean and Michelle, former Secret Service agents, are now private investigators in a quiet rural town in Virginia.
Sean and Michelle have been hired to investigate a robbery at the home of an extremely wealthy, yet oddly dysfunctional family. A man doing odd jobs at the home of the aristocratic Battles has been accused of breaking into a hidden compartment in the matriarch's closet and stealing its contents, including her wedding ring. The family's prominent attorney believes the worker is innocent and asks Sean and Michelle to look into it.
Then, on her daily run, Michelle discovers the charred body of a young woman left in the woods. The skeleton is wearing at watch set to one o'clock. The watch bears the Zodiac symbol. After two more body's are found, also wearing watches set to peculiar hours, and the local newspaper receives a taunting letter, Police Chief Todd Williams realizes he has a serial killer on his hands. He turns to Sean and Michelle for help.
As Sean and Michelle mange both the robbery and the murder investigations, the line between the two becomes more and more blurred. Secrets and hidden lives are exposed and lies are uncovered as Sean and Michelle race against the clock to stop the killer.
I really couldn't put Hour Game down. It has a deliciously fast-pasted plot that hooks you from the beginning. Baldacci's writing style is strong, yet flows and connects brilliantly.
The fact that Sean and Michelle returned in Hour Game was a great draw for me, because I think they are two of his best characters. I also liked that you don't have to read Split Second in order to understand and appreciate Hour Game, so anyone can pick up this novel and enjoy it, even though the main characters are the same.
One of the reasons I love Baldacci's books is that he really keeps you hanging on from page one to the last sentence of the novel. I love mystery/thrillers, but I hate knowing "whodunnit" a third of the way through the book. I never experience that with Baldacci. He always has a fresh twist. He makes you believe you have all the information to guess, then he throws another little tidbit at you, or introduces another character, or suddenly gives your suspect an alibi.
I LOVED this book. Hour Game was a completely satisfying read. I enjoyed every minute in this novel. There are not any "slow spots" that you have to trudge through to get to the good stuff. You jump right in and hang on until the ride is over! Enjoy!
