The Bottom Line: Give it three visits and you'll understand why it's beloved by so many. The food can really be exceptional.

The thing with House of Nanking is it's inconsistent. I've had some really excellent dishes and at other times, it's good, but not great, and occasionally it's just mediocre.
However, the lack of cleanliness IS consistent. It's always messy and sometimes disturbingly dirty - grimy dishes, scary bathroom, supplies stored everywhere, etc.
The service runs the range from average Chinese restaurant service – you know what I’m talking about – pragmatic, slightly gruff, light on charm and niceties (hmm, kind of like the average communist state) - to downright rude to thoughtful, as when Peter the owner is around. He'll often take food orders, chat with you, and have something special created for you.
The thing that I really appreciate about Nan King though is deviation. When I’m in the mood for Chinese, but just can't face the old standard plates of Kung Pao Prawns or Chicken Chow Mein, it's time for a trip to Nan King. Sometimes they actually do seasonal dishes! Imagine incorporating yams into a plate of sesame prawns in the wintertime! Revolutionary!
Sometimes when Peter's around they'll create something unique, a new dish with many of the usual Chinese flavors, but rearranged and delicious. This kind - in fact any kind - of innovation in Chinese food is usually only found at very high-end places, and Nan King is definitely not high-class. Sadly, there really are no fortune cookies – perhaps a good place to visit when you'd rather not know what fate has in store for you!
