I really enjoy House of Nanking -- but I have been there enough to know what to order - and what not to order.
The House of Nanking is known for its inventive dishes:
Nanking Stuffed Mushrooms -- large button mushrooms stuffed with peas, zucchini, and mushroom(?) mixture battered && deep fried. Tastes heavenly. I can't find it anywhere else. (I've tried!)
Nanking veggie pot stickers -- same filling as above but stuffed into wantons and steamed rather than fried. Comes with a tasty sauce.
Deep fried tofu with peanut sauce -- reminds me of thai food -- but extremely tasty! I was very pleasantly surprised how fabulous this dish is
Sesame chicken (or shrimp) -- deep fried chicken (or shrimp) with sweet potatoes and snow peas (I think once it had snap peas). Wonderful sauce. Extremely tasty!
Now the dish that I had that was boring (or simply the same as every other Chinese restaurant was the green beans. I think they had garlic. I found them very boring - not special like the dishes I started with. [ie. wasn't a bad dish -- just nothing out of the ordinary]
Yes, it is crowded. It is not the cleanest place -- though I didn't find it as bad as some other Chinese places I have been. You have to ask for water & chop sticks. Service is somewhat variable -- sometimes good -- sometimes AWFUL.
I go for lunch. I haven't had to wait more then 5 minutes -- but I go a bit off peak (ie. 11:45am or 1pm). Haven't tried true rush hour.
The speciality dishes are worth it. I am hooked!
