I went to the House of Nanking during a business trip to SF a couple of years ago. I have somewhat of a reputation as a foodie, and my colleagues went with me on my recommendation--I had read a good review of the House of Nanking. The review I read, however, didn't go into specifics like the ambience! When I saw the place I quailed inwardly--I am willing to sacrifice atmosphere, service, and yes, even cleanliness for good food, but what would my friends say?? As it turned out, the food was so good that I was a hero!
We were seated at the counter (the only place available) and watched the incredibly unsanitary food preparation. We were also not allowed to order for ourselves--the waitress snatched our menus away and proclaimed that she would bring us something we would like. As it turned out, like it we did! I don't even know what we got--a shrimp dish, a fish dish, a chicken dish, and a beef dish, I remember, but who cares--they were all sublime. The seafood in particular was to die for.
My husband and I are taking a trip to San Francisco this spring, and the House of Nanking is on the agenda. I keep warning him about the spots on the glasses, the dirty silverware, the bathrooms (!!), but then I start to wax lyrical on the food, and he still wants to go. I can't wait!
