Pros: Extra cushioned, thick, non slippery and nice colour.Easy to clean and store.
Cons: The gripping effect can be improved
I was a little worried about my mother performing her Yoga asanas on a mat that she had picked up at a local department store. Despite her joint problems she was immensely keen to follow a helpful yogic regime prescribed by her instructor. I used to see her shift uncomfortably on her mat during some of the postures and felt the requirement of a thicker and better mat.
The Hugger Mugger brand had always agreed with me. I researched and found that their pilates mat could do the trick. I gifted her mat as she was leaving for her session one evening. My mom was a little sceptical about the thickness of the mat but then she was eager to try it out her herself. I had fallen for the unassuming charcoal colour and I was glad that she took an instant liking to it too.
The friction free surface helped her to grip on to the mat without slipping during her lying postures and this really helped with her constant shifting (which was a feature earlier as she found it uncomfortable without the stickiness of the mat that she was using).
The 1/4th inch thickness of the mat provides an extra cushioning effect in comparison to the regular yoga mats. This added thickness definitely helps in the more difficult asanas where the need for a little more plush helps concentrate better. This is especially true in the case of pranayamas and breathing exercises. The length of 68 inch works well for most people too.
It can be easily cleaned with any surface cleaner and stacked away in a small corner. However just like any other yoga accessory, please be sure to consult your instructor too. However, I see no reason for this mat going wrong for anyone. It has surely helped my aging mother and she has been using it happily since the past eighteen months.
