| Ice_Princess's Full Review: Huggies Clean Team Toddler Hand Soap Blue Melon Sp... |
While I'm in college, I'm living with my aunt, uncle, and three-year old cousin. My cousin was potty trained several months ago, but we still struggle with getting him to wash his hands after using the restroom. About two months ago I was picking up some soap for myself when I noticed Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap. It looked like it might be a product that would help make my cousin want to wash his hands, so I bought a bottle.
Price
I paid $3.99 for a 9 oz bottle of Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap at my neighborhood drugstore, but I've seen it for up to $1 less at other stores. That price range seems to be a pretty normal price for a product like this that is geared toward kids.
Packaging
Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap comes in a very cute bottle. The main base of the bottle has a curved shape with a wide base and mouth that reminds me a little of a flower vase. The bottle is clear but is covered in a colorful plastic that is blue on the bottom and red on top. There is a picture of Henry the hippo, the Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap mascot, on the front of the bottle. There is a cut out in the plastic on the back of the bottle that lets you see how much soap is in the bottle and has a fill line for refills. The directions are on the back of the bottle in both picture and written form. The dispenser pump is purple and in the shape of a hippo head. The pump appears to be solid and sturdy.
The Product
Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap is a blue liquid inside the bottle but comes out of the dispenser as foam. Only a small amount of foam comes out of the dispenser, too small I thought at first, but it really is the perfect amount for a toddler's little hands. The foam is light and fluffy and very easy to spread around. The soap rinses off cleanly and doesn't dry out your hands.
The scent of the soap is supposed to be "blue melon splash", but I don't think it smells very much like melon. To me the scent is more like rubbing alcohol with a hint of melon. My cousin doesn't seem to mind though and the scent does wear off within a few minutes, so I don't see the scent as a problem.
Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap has a couple of fun features that separate it from the other children's foaming hand soaps on the market. First, there is the hippo head shaped dispenser. It's pretty detailed and kids think it's cute and a little funny. There is also the actual foam. Many of the other foaming soaps I've tried are colored in the bottle but the foam is white. The foam from Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap is the same blue color as the liquid soap inside the bottle. Kids, especially kids like my cousin, whose favorite color is blue, love this. Another fun feature is the flashing timer. Every time the dispenser is pushed, a little red light starts flashing on the hippo head. The flashing lasts for twenty seconds and is supposed to let the kids know how long to lather the soap.
Ingredients
Water, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium laureth sulfate, PEG-80 sorbitan laurate, sodium trideceth sulfate, PEG-150 distearate, propylene glycol, DMDM hydantoin, methylparaben, citric acid, propylparaben, quaternium-15, tetrasodium EDTA, blue 1, green 3, fragrance
Directions
From the bottle: 1. Pump soap into hands. 2. Lather until flashing stops. 3. Rinse
My Experience
Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap was in my house for about a month before it was tossed into the garbage, with about a quarter of the soap still in it. It is a great soap that cleans well and my cousin really liked it, but it has design flaws that outweigh that.
The main flaw is with the hippo head dispenser. It's really cute but not really functional. The actual spout that the soap comes out of is about a half inch back in the hippo's mouth so when you dispense the soap, about half of it has to be scooped out of the hippo's mouth. And even with the scooping, it was impossible to keep the foam from building up and blocking the spout.
Another flaw involves refilling and reusing the bottle. This bottle is easy to refill, but the batteries for the flashing timer are not replaceable. Since the flashing timer was one of the things that drew me to this product, I wouldn't really want to use the bottle without it. I don't think my cousin would stand for it either, it would probably frustrate him that the bottle used to flash, but then one day it just didn't anymore. And since the flashing got dimmer after about the third week, the batteries probably wouldn't even make it through one refill.
Final Thoughts
My thoughts about Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap have been somewhat mixed. On the one hand, it is a good soap that cleans well and makes children want to wash their hands. On the other hand, the dispenser is poorly designed and the batteries are not replaceable. In the end, I decided that I won't be buying Huggies Clean Team Foaming Hand Soap again or recommending it to anyone unless the design is changed.
