Having a baby in the house means constant trips to the store. The formula runs out one minute, baby wipes run low, etc., etc. But the most common store run for me is to purchase diapers. And the brand I got to know first is
Huggies Diapers, a popular diaper available in most every baby aisle of every store.
Basic Facts About This Product:
Huggies diapers are baby shaped, according to the manufacturer, which means they are designed to fit the shape of a baby in a snug manner that supposedly helps reduce leakage. These diapers feature a cartoon design with a color drawing of Mickey and Minnie mouse in the front of each diaper, near the top. To the left of the cartoon is a number indicating the diaper size.
Speaking of the sizes, Huggies makes these diapers in six levels: Size 1 is for infants up to fourteen pounds; Size 2 is for babies between twelve and eighteen pounds; Size 3 is used for kids between sixteen and twenty- eight pounds; Size 4 fits kids from twenty- two to thirty- seven pounds; Size 5 is for kids over 27 pounds; and Size 6 is for larger children over 35 pounds. The different sizes overlap, so you can easily make the transition from one weight level to the next.
Huggies diapers have velcro tabs on each side on the top/back part of each diaper. The velcro sticks to any part of the front surface so a parent can easily adjust the diaper slightly tighter or looser by simply moving the tab to another area of the front.
Customer Service:
Huggies wants its customers to be happy so it provides many different ways to find out more about its products and to get questions answered. One place to consult is the Huggies web site, huggies.com. The web site is good for finding general facts about the companys diapers, but it doesnt give many answers to specific questions. If you have a more detailed question, you will need to call the customer support line, 888-525-8388, between 8am and 4pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.
Final Thoughts:
Huggies diapers are one of the first brands I purchased when my baby girl was born back in the summer of 2005. I had used Huggies in the past when I was changing the diapers of my nieces and nephews so I am not a first- time rookie in this area. However, I was not aware of the changes that had taken place with baby diapers in the past fifteen years so Huggies provided a good learning experience for me. These seemed like all- around good diapers with a trustworthy name so they seemed like a good place to start in my diaper purchasing routine.
One thing I did not know about baby diapers is that they now fasten with Velcro (I told you it had been a while since I changed a diaper!). At first, I thought this was a stupid idea because I didnt think this would be secure. I have used Velcro on many other things and it seems like it opens too easily to be effective with a diaper. I was proven wrong, however, and now I can understand why all diapers have switched to this method of fastening. The tabs on these diapers measure about one inch by one inch (they are almost square) and what is nice is that, since there is no adhesive tab like in the past, there is no worry that the tab will lose its stickiness. With Velcro, you can pull the tab off, check your babys diaper, and refasten over and over again.
As far as the design of this diaper, well, I dont see anything special about it. Huggies claims that its diapers are baby shaped, meaning they are designed to fit the contours of a babys lower body. But arent all diapers shaped this way? This seems like nothing more than an advertising gimmick to me. I dont see anything at all that is unique about the design.
Huggies diapers feature elastic edges that go between your babys legs to help prevent leakage. Do they make a difference? Unfortunately, no, they do not. The elastic is weak and Im pretty certain that Huggies did this to make them as gentle to a baby as possible. But in making them gentler, they also made them less likely to hold back leakage. As my little girl got older and began to urinate in larger quantities, this leakage problem became more and more obvious. Now, if and when I use Huggies, I am more wary about letting her go very long between changes. I need to get to her quickly, before the diaper has saturated itself and the leaking begins.
With the leakage, there is another interesting problem that can occur with these diapers. If they get really soaked (like if you forget to change your baby at night before bedtime and them go to change her in the morning), they leak out small white flakes. These flakes are comprised of the interior material that is supposed to absorb the wetness. If it gets too saturated, it starts to fall out of the diaper, leaving a trail of white flakes wherever your baby lies.
Huggies diapers sell for a uniform price for the different sizes, but as you move up the size ladder, the quantity per package continues to decline. With Size 1, there are 68 diapers in a standard package; With Size 2, there are 58; Size 3, 48; Size 4, 42; Size 5, 38; and Size 6, 32. The price for each of these packages is the same- roughly $12 to $14. But there are fewer diapers in each, so the price per diaper is higher with larger sizes.
Overall, I think Huggies regular diapers are a waste of money, but they are a good place to start for a new parent. Its hit and miss with these diapers, and I think some parents will find them acceptable and others will rate them poorly. I thought they were ok at first, but I lost confidence in them after a few weeks of usage. They have limited absorbability and there are other diapers on the market that perform equally well or better for the same or less money.
