Candice923's Full Review: Huggies Diapers, Gentle Care Newborn Diapers, Size...
Before my twins were born on 3/14/08, I won 3 months worth of diapers from a website. Plus, each time my husband and I would do some hefty grocery shopping, we would pick up a package of diapers, wipes, or some other sort of baby care product. I received diapers from a few people at my baby shower, and we even bought a couple of packages from babies R Us so that we were prepared. Many of these packages were of the Huggies Gentle Care variety.
While in the NICU, the twins were dressed in Huggies diapers, size P (Preemie) and 1. When the twins left, the NICU staff gave us several packages of the diapers that we used, including the Huggies Gentle Care Diapers in size P and 1. Since they were used in the NICU, we figured that there was nothing wrong with them, and picked u several packs of the Newborn diapers that we had at home.
Boy, were we wrong.
First of all, let me preface this by saying that there is a BIG difference between a NICU baby and a "normal" newborn, especially when the NICU baby is premature. It doesn't matter what the birth weights are of a preemie - my babies were 4lbs 12oz (Catherine) and 5lbs 11oz (Charles), even though they were nearly 7 weeks early. Newborns that arrive on or near their due date are usually very wiggly and such, while preemies don't really move too much. Charlie and Catie were both in isolettes when they were born, which didn' give them a lot of room to move. They were hooked up to all sorts of tubes, which also limited their movements. If they weren't being held, they were tightly swaddled by the NICU nurses and asleep. Once they were out of their isolettes, they started to crib together. Even though this lasted just 3 days in the NICU, the babies still didn't move too much.
The reason I bring up movement is because these diapers started to leak once the babies became active. During the first few days home, the twins still didn't move all that much. We didn't have any diapering problems at all. As a matter of fact, the Huggies Gentle Care Newborn Diapers were rather absorbent. There is a netting-type part of the diaper between the baby's skin and an absorbent layer, which trap runny stools and excess urine. This is an excellent feature - when it works.
Unfortunately, the baby must be stationary during the time he or she "goes potty", and for about 10 minutes thereafter so that the excrement is absorbed into the diaper. If not, watch out! the worst leakage comes from the leg area. It doesn't make sense, as the diaper seems to be fitted in that part. The leg bands have elastic, which fits to the infant's legs... At least, that is what they are supposed to do.
I couldn't figure out why they leaked until Charlie slept for 5 hours. I went to change him, and the diaper was heavy with urine. It was heavy enough to cause a gap in the leg bands, which caused urine and poop to leak out, ruining his pajamas and making it very uncomfortable for him. I am sure that this is why they have leaked in the past. I just wasn't paying enough attention to figure out why.
Huggies Gentle Care Newborn Diapers are supposed to fit infants up to 10 lbs. Catie was so small when she was born that she wore the Preemie size. After two weeks, however, she was in the Newborn size. Charlie, on the other hand, was big enough from birth that he didn't need the Preemies and went right into Newborns. However, during his second week in the NICU, when he was a little over 5 lbs., they moved him into Huggies Gentle Care Size 1 Diapers. I was told that I could use the Newborn size on Charlie. The reason they didn't use the Newborn size on Charlie was because the NICU had actually run out. The Size 1 Diapers did the trick for him.
As I mentioned previously, my husband and I had a ton of Huggies Gentle Care Newborn Diapers at home. Since we are staying at my mother's house until I am fully healed, my husband just picked up the Super Mega Pack of 80 from our house to keep at my mom's. We figured that the would last us a couple of weeks. Nope-- Due to all of the accidents, we go through about 10 diapers per day. At least. considering that this pack of diapers cost a little over $30, we are talking a lot of money down the drain.
The diaper tabs are some sort of Velcro, not the old-fashioned pieces of tape (or whatever they were). this makes it easier to adjust the diaper to fit the baby if you don't do it correctly the first time. However, I have experienced a slight problem with the Velcro sticking to the baby's clothing while I am trying to remove the soiled diaper.
The only real think that I like about the Huggies Gentle Care Newborn Diapers is the cute Winnie The Pooh design on them. There are Pooh characters decorating each diaper, including Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and more. Considering that we have a Winnie the Pooh nursery theme, I love the coordinating diapers. Too cute! It's a shame that they are ineffective.
My sister-in-law and best friend both warned me against Huggies after the first time I complained to them. They told me to return them, exchange them, and even sell them on eBay. Boy, I should have listened.
