A Tale of Three Trainers
Written: Mar 06 '01
Pros:Can be a potty training aid or potty accident insurance
Cons:Moderately expensive, may hinder training for some kids
The Bottom Line: If you decide to use pull ups, Huggies Pull Ups are the best quality.
Most modern parents are familiar with the name "pull ups." The original, and most well-known brand of these diaper-to-potty helpers, is Huggies Pull Ups. The Huggies brand dominates the market, and for good reason. There is little competition, and many curious parents are willing to try these "big kid pants."
Features of Huggies Pull Ups
Pull Ups are sold in packages that are smaller in number than your average package of diapers. The sizing is generally based upon the average range of toddler sizes, based on weight. The sizes range from small to extra large and accommodate children from weights in the 20's to over 38 pounds. For the smaller sizes, a few extra Pull Ups are included, less for the largest size. An average package will have 15 Pull Ups.
Pull Ups are somewhat less bulky than diapers. Consider them the thickness of an ultra trim diaper that can be worn snugly like a pair of underwear. The legs have stretchy seams to accommodate the different sizes of children and when wearing the correct size, a child should be able to move comfortably. There should be no marks caused by the leg seams.
Pull Ups are absorbant enough to contain accidents. I have not found them to leak, but a training child should be checked regularly. When wetness does occur, the star prints in front will blur and fade. There is a Mickey Mouse design on the front and back.
When Pull Ups serve their purpose
Huggies Pull Ups are dependable and an effective potty training aid when used at the right time. When a child is in training and showing definite potty-ready signals, Pull Ups can give them confidence. They look like both a diaper and "big kid pants." Pull Ups can help with the transition when they are used by parents, "prepared for accidents, but not expecting them regularly. Essentially, I have found that a child with some pre-training success, will be able to use a Pull Up best. They are convenient for travel outside the home.
My oldest son never used Pull ups. He completely bypassed the stage and went to underwear. Some kids are so ready at training time that they may not need the aid of Pull Ups. With my second son, Pull Ups were a great help. They gave him confidence without embarrassing him with wet pants or clothing. He used Pull ups for about 6 weeks. I don't believe any longer use would be beneficial, unless it is for the purpose of travel, or nighttime. If a child doesn't respond to Pull Ups, you might be wise to stick with the less expensive diapers for a bit longer.
Pull Ups are also wonderful for nighttime use. My son still uses them at night because he is a deep sleeper and though, completely trained for 2 1/2 years, Pull Ups saves us unwanted wet sheets and bedding. Many kids that are younger and have trained for daytime may benefit from Pull Ups at night only. A jumbo pack of 30 covers the month.
When Pull Ups don't work
Pull Ups will not work if a child is not ready. My daughter proved this recently. She loved the Mickey design, the stars, the "big kid underwear," but she treated them like a diaper. The pack lasted 3 days until I went to the store to pick up diapers. We also found ourselves at the mall with a wet Pull Up and I had to totally remove her shoes and pants to change her. More of a hassle than convenience in this case.
My tricky little girl also realizes that she is safe with the Pull Ups and it has, in a sense, hindered her desire to run to her potty. It is a big kid diaper to her, I believe. Though I will definitely use Pull Ups as a part of her future training, she has shown more success at home with regular underwear. We are still in training.
Huggies Pull Ups are the top quality pull ups on the market and I recommend them to assist in potty training if they seem to work for your child. At around $7.99 a package, they are meant for toddlers ready to train. If you don't see the signs, hold off and keep the diapers for awhile-they're cheaper. As compared to other generic brands, Huggies beats all the cheaper, saggy pants, pull ups on the market.
