| modernmarvel's Full Review: Huggies Supreme Diapers |
I have three kids and have probably tried every possible brand of diapers over the last ten years. I really like Huggie Supremes for certain situations and definitely can recommend them.
THE FIRST CHILD VS. THE THIRD CHILD
Let's face it. The first child gets changed far more frequently than the third child. My oldest daughter got changed at least every two hours during the day and right before bedtime and right upon getting up. Because she got changed so frequently, we didn't need the super absorbent diapers. The normal, discount brands worked just fine for her most of the time. I usually only used the premium diapers during times when extra absorbency was required. That normally came up when baby had the runs or long car trips or extreme diaper rash when we couldn't leave her uncovered.
The third child, at least in our house, has a different standard for diaper changing. She goes a little longer between diaper changes than the first born. I am just so busy with the first two that I don't have time to get to her right away. Luckily, she doesn't have very sensitive skin so we don't get diaper rash too frequently. However, I find that I end up using more absorbent diapers because they work better at holding more liquid away from her skin.
HUGGIES SUPREME PERFORMANCE
Huggies Supreme diapers are very, very absorbent compared to other brands. It seems, to me, they hold much more liquid than the discount brands. They also seem better at keeping that liquid away from baby's skin which does result in less diaper rash. I like them for my third child, even if they are more expensive, because I do think they perform better under more extreme circumstances such as long times between diaper changes. Also, my kids tend to get diarrhea when they take antibiotics. I put them in supreme diapers during those episodes to help protect their skin.
I also find that Huggies Supreme Diapers fit better than most other brands. The legs definitely hold well without squishing baby's skin. I don't think I have ever had leg leakage in these diapers. However, if baby makes an enormous poop - that poop is going to go somewhere - and no diaper is going to contain it. In the case of these diapers, the poop goes right out the top and up the back.
These diapers have a nice cloth-like outside. That feature doesn't matter to much for me. I think it is probably nicer for baby in very hot weather when compared to the brands that have a plastic outer covering but I have never really notices a preference for her or me either way. The tabs to secure the diapers are also quite nice. The velcro-like tabs can be opened and closed several times. This makes it easy to get a good fit on a squirmy toddler but, again, this isn't the feature that makes me buy these diapers.
I also use Huggies Supreme if my kids get diaper rash and I cant leave them uncovered. In those cases, I usually buy the diapers one size up to allow lots of air circulation near the skin. In those cases, the diapers do well at not leaking and keeping moisture away from the skin.
PRICE
Huggies Supreme are one of the most expensive diapers out there. If you go the manufacturers web site, you can sign up for coupons they will send you in the mail. There are also a lot of coupons but, even with the coupons, the price is still high. I buy them in bulk at B.Js sometimes to save some money.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
Overall, based on fit and absorbency, I would recommend these diapers for certain situations. If you change your child frequently, there is no diaper rash and they arent sick, I cant say I would use these diapers based on cost. But I do think the extra money is worth it if your child is prone to diaper rash or is sick. They do perform better in those circumstances.
