I have been cleaning out closets and getting rid of games we no longer play. Gamewright’s Hula Hippos is a fun game that our whole family enjoyed playing when my children were younger. I don’t recall where or when we got this but it was a favorite for some time.
Out of the box Hula Hippos includes twenty four wooden hippos, six each of four different colors, one wooden hoop and rules. Let’s play
Each player chooses a color of hippo they would like to be. Each player should line up all six hippos in front of them. One player takes the wooden hoop and holds it upright between their thumb and forefinger and spins it.
Then the fun begins. Each player, with one finger, flicks their hippos into the center of the playing surface trying to strategically place them so that the hoop will fall on or around their hippo. Watch out as hippos will start flying everywhere. Hippo flicking takes some practice to get it right. You can only flick each hippo once and no one can touch the hula while it is spinning. Where it stops, no one knows.
Once the hula stops spinning, see who has the most hippos either inside the hula or touching the hula. For each hippo inside or touching the hula, you receive one point. The player to get four points first, wins.
The game is simple to play. It does not require any reading or batteries. It’s not educational but it is fun. It’s a fast paced game but my son quickly grew tired of it.
The only thing I would change about the game would be to include some type of enclosed playing area. This way the hippos would not go flying everywhere when flicked but then again, that is part of the fun.
The game is recommended for children five to seven. Small pieces are included so this game is not recommended for children under the age of three due to choking hazards.
If you are looking for a fun, fast paced, non educational game, Hula Hippos is a good game. Just watch out for flying hippos! Gamewright’s Hula Hippos is hippo-flicking fun.
