| cmaw63's Full Review: Anne Frasier - Hush |
Since I'm running out of new books by the authors I usually read, I decided to give Anne Frasier's debut book (published 2002) a try.
Hush
Years have passed since the Madonna Murderer took the lives of several of Chicago's single women and their infant boys. He was never caught...now he's back.
Ivy Dunlap, a criminal profiler, is called from Canada to come back to her hometown to help stop this madman. Why her? She's the only survivor of the Madonna Murderer's spree 16 years earlier. Having lost her son to this killer, will she be strong enough to face her fears and do what it takes to stop him?
It has fallen upon Homicide Detective Max Irving to lead the investigation and stop the Madonna Murderer's reign of terror, leaving little time to deal with his teenage son. Max wavers between finding a job that will allow him a normal life and doing what he's good at...catching madmen. When his work and home life become intertwined will Max be there when his son, Ethan, really needs him?
New to Me
Not only was Anne Frasier new to my author list, the concept of a victim coming back years later to be an integral part of an investigation was too. Ivy Dunlap was an interesting character that was allowed to be as vulnerable and scared, as she was strong. She was so interesting that, after two days and another book, I remembered the name without referring back to Hush.
Max Irving and Ethan were characters I could relate to, also. The overworked father and rebellious teenager made for scenarios that, after raising two sons, I thought were parallel to real life. I felt the anger and love between the two throughout their confrontations. I was, also, sympathetic towards Max's frustration and sorrow as each murder played out. The budding relationship between Max and Ivy was well written. While they were allowed to explore the possibility of more between them, the case came first. For me, when reading a murder mystery, that's how I want it. If I wanted an overload of romance, I would buy a romance novel. (No offense romance novel fans)
The subject of the mother, infant son murders is one that could have gone horribly wrong. Anne Frasier handled it in a way that allowed for sadness, without the feeling of horror. A surprising, to me, plot for an author's first book that was handled like an old pro. Anne Frasier has written a debut book that makes me look forward to reading the others she has now written. If she kept this level of writing as her norm she will be added to my favorite author list. For now, Hush has left me impressed with her work.
