Cons:Unreliable, hard to start, hard to keep started, consistent breakdown
The Bottom Line: I do not recommend the Husqvarna Chain Saw due to its consistent failure of hard long starts, no starts, and parts failure.
Based on various recommendations and the supposedly good reputation of Husqvarna, we bought the Husqvarna Chainsaw, Model 55 Rancher (Farm Tough) a few years ago. This particular model was the only model on sale at the time and had the engine power that my husband needed. This was our first chainsaw as we had just moved to timber country.

It worked fine for the first month, felling trees and cutting timber how it was supposed to.
Then the problems of trying to start it became an issue. We took it in on several occasions to the shop during the warranty period, and one time I was told by the shop when I went to pick it up that the muffler was backwards and that the problem was fixed. My husband had a good laugh with that one, because he never touched the muffler and if it was in fact backwards, then we had bought it that way. The starting problem was never solved under the warranty because it would finally start; therefore, no manufacturer's defects according to the warranty repair shop.
After the warranty ended, we took it in once again due to the same starting problems except with an additional problem of once it did start, it would not stay on. We were told the recoil starter spring needed replacement. Geez, I wonder why they did not replace this part while it was under warranty. Parts and labor were $60.00.
It worked once again for a few weeks and once again the problem of starting it became an issue again.
My husband would yank and yank until his arm became sore trying to get it to start. He decided to tear it apart himself, tune it, and replace the recoil starter spring again.
At Christmas, we went to a Christmas tree farm and found a tree we wanted and once again the chain saw would not start. In fact, the starting pull cord broke this time. It was snowing, and of course my husband was quite upset and called the chainsaw a few well-chosen names as he tromped back to the office to get a handsaw.
This time we took it to a different shop and we were told that it was not worth fixing and they would just be fishing trying to figure out all the problems. That cost us $50 for the non-diagnosis problem. It was suggested to us that we would be better off to buy a new one. While there, we noticed that the shop was packed with Husqvarna chain saws in for repair. In fact, it was so loaded with the Husqvarna chain saws, the person had a hard time finding ours and we had to point out which one was ours because we recognized the box we had delivered it in.
We became weary with all the problems and decided to cut our losses and bought a John Deere chain saw.
Our Husqvarna chain saw is now resting in pieces in the garage. My husband has not decided if he is going to try to fix it again or just toss in the garbage.
The chainsaw has a 3.2 cubic inch engine with 3.2 hp.
Idling speed is 2,500 rpm and maximum speed is 12,500 rpm.
It has an air injection feature that is supposed to remove up to 97% of the direct and dust before it reaches the air filter.
It also has an inertia chain brake should kickback occur.
It also features a low vibe system that reduces engine vibration from reaching the handle and throttle control. However, we do not notice any vibration difference while using our John Deere chainsaw.
Acceptable bar lengths are from 18 inches to 20 inches.
The weight is 13.6 pounds.
The warranty is one year.
Determining What Bar Length You Need
For those who don?t quite understand the purposes of bar lengths, it is for the diameter size of the tree(s) you will be using it for. We bought ours with a 20 inch bar length.
The Husqvarna Model 55 is equipped with a spark arresting muffler screen to prevent a fire hazard. Keeping this clean of debris is very important.
Inertia chain brakes are designed to rapidly stop the chain from rotating. When the chain brake lever/hand guard is pushed toward the bar, the chain should stop immediately. A chain brake however, does not prevent kickback.
Kickback: occurs when the moving chain contacts an object at the upper portion of the tip of the guide bar or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Contact at the upper portion of the tip of the guide bar can cause the chain to dig into the object and stop the chain for an instant. The result is a lightning fast, reverse action, which kicks the guide bar up and towards the operator. If the saw chain is pinched along the top of the guide bar, the guide bar can be driven rapidly back towards the operator. Both can cause serious injury to the operator.
What We Recommend
We have bought a John Deere chainsaw that is loaded with features, has more horsepower, lower in price, longer warranty, and are extremely happy with it. My review on the John Deere is located on my profile page should you be interested in it.
However, should you decide you buy a Husqvarna chain saw, I wish you the best of luck.
Thank you for reading my review, and I hope you have found it helpful in your purchasing decision.
