Adequate Hotel, Convenient to Bush Airport

Written: Dec 21 '03
Pros:Convenient location to airport; nice variety of mature trees in the atrium around the pool.
Cons:Bland 1980's "office park" exterior; inadequate lighting in sleeping room.
The Bottom Line: Recommended for business traveler needing convenience to Bush Intercontinental Airport Houston.

General Information

I am a frequent business traveler, and I stayed at this Hyatt Hotel on a non-business trip for two nights in late 2003.

Location

This hotel is located south of the airport, probably about ten minutes away by car. The area is populated mostly with other hotels, office buildings, and a few other industrial looking buildings. There is a fast-food restaurant next door (Taco Bell, I think), but not a lot of other restaurants or small businesses around.

General Hotel Information

The building is of 1980's vintage, it is three stories tall, and it is arranged around an enclosed courtyard with a variety of tall trees and a pool. The building looks uninviting from outside, but I found it to be comfortable enough on the inside for my short stay.

Parking

There is ample free parking in the lot next to the building.

Staff

While I made no special requests of the staff, I did have several encounters with them, and they were very friendly and eager to assist.

Sleeping Room

I occupied a non-smoking room with a queen-size bed on the second floor. The room had a chest of drawers, L-shaped desk with an upper tier, two desk chairs, upholstered chair, two telephones with two phone lines, TV, ironing board with iron, coffee maker, and hair dryer. The bed was comfortable. The room was dark, and - even with the lamps - I could not seem to brighten it enough. The window was covered with a venetian blind made of dark wood. Hanging on the left and right sides of the window were drapery panels that did not close to cover the window (which the venetian blind did adequately), but which also would not open wide enough to clear the entire window for more light. The venetian blind could be drawn open, but it was remarkably heavy to lift and unwieldy.

Restaurants

There are two restaurants in the hotel. I had one meal in each, and they were typical hotel fare. In the main restaurant, I especially enjoyed the vegetarian chili. There is a buffet, but I was not around when it was in service. The staff were very pleasant and provided good service.

Other Hotel Services

I saw a business center just off the lobby. It seemed to be outfitted with the standard copy machine and desktop computers. I am sure that the prices are steep as per the norm in hotel business centers.

There is a fitness room, but I was not looking for it, and I did not find it.

Conclusion

This hotel is conveniently located to Bush Airport and will serve the business traveler who needs to crash before leaving on an early morning flight. There are no special features to speak of, but convenience makes up for overall blandness.
