Let me guess (Reply to this comment)

the section that threw you off was in the Scholar's tale, where he sees what only his daughter could have seen. Personally, that didn't bother me as much as the inexplicable shift to present tense at the end of the Soldier's tale.
I too loved the Priest's tale. It was astonishing, wonderful, and terrible (in a good way). But for me the book never again gained that height.

Try Cambridge. They have a much better science fiction section anyway - the best I've ever seen in any public library. Anyone in MA can get a card (I actually have cards at three of the local library networks).

Thank you! I just finished the sequel, so I'm sure I'll be reviewing it soon too. I'm glad to hear about the teaching work--congrats!
It was very nice to have the next novel after I read "Deathstalker" be something so good, since "Deathstalker" was such a painfully awful read. =}

righto (Reply to this comment)

This was a typically excellent review - i think - of a book i loved years ago, and have been very annoyed at Boston Public Library's inability to keep in stock (all copies marked Lost). I should buy it; you did a fine job reminding of what it was about, and i'm pretty certain i agreed with you about his striking the right balance between exposition and leaving us in the dark. Though i'm not the best person to have on your side there: i'm a (novice) teacher, i _like_ endless dull exposition.
But i also like short, interesting exposition. Well-done. I finally have my first real (though part-time) teaching income, as of next week: i can have a part-time reading outgo then.
cheers,
- Brian

It was the opposite for me. I'd loved Simmons' horror before, but had avoided his science fiction... maybe, perversely, because it had been so popular. ;) But I loved it.

Hyperion seemed like the type of book I should like but I just couldn't get into it. I kept thinking I should be enjoying this more as I was reading but I never did. Eventually I gave up. I'm glad someone got some enjoyment out of the thing.

*grin* Yeah, usually with this many reviews of a book already in place I wouldn't bother, but I loved the book so much that I just really wanted to review it.

I was introduced to his pure horror first--great stuff that! I have a friend who used leave good horror books outside my door, and Simmons was one of the horror authors he introduced me to. I don't think Richard ever steered me wrong. :)

an incredible write, though I prefer his non-sci fi to Hyperion and the like. In any case, great review.

From the sound of it this book does a much better job of being its own story, rather than simply re-framing an old one. It's one of those books I've meant to read for years, but never quite got around to until now. :) Of course now I have to dig out the sequel, which thankfully I have...

...I read quasar's review of a sci-fi version of Jane Eyre -- but she wasn't nearly as pleased with it as you are with Hyperion. Sounds like this one was done well, but I'm surprised it ends with a cliffhanger!
Great review!
