Don't leave home without it!

  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Ease of Use:
  • Quality of Tech Support:
Pros:Lightweight, High Quality Screen, Broadband cellular connection
Cons:Processing power could be better, more coverage with the cellular broadband.
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for sheer processing power, this isn't the machine for you. If portability and e-mail on the road are your primary goals, you can't go wrong.

I purchased the Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Notebook primarily for portability and high-speed wireless access while on the road. I own an HP, which is quite large and quite HEAVY, but has awesome processing power. But if you can't take it with you then it isn't doing you much good. It's too heavy to comfortably travel with. So the ThinkPad is a welcome tool!

I love the size and ergonomics. The keyboard is the best available on a laptop. It uses the Trackpoint system of moving the mouse rather than a touch pad. Beware, if you haven't used the Trackpoint, play with it for a while. It is very different than the touchpad. My first laptop was an IBM ThinkPad so the trackpoint was like coming home for me. I hadn't realized how much I'd missed its accuracy and ease of use! So kudos to Lenovo for standing behind the trackpoint!

I use the X60 primarily for e-mail and Microsoft Office applications and the X60 works fine for word processing and spreadsheets, etc. However, I have found it to be underpowered when doing photo editing and utiltizing a mid-size Access database. I wish I had upgraded the processor, which is an option. (The additional heat generated would have been worth the trade-off)

What I love most about it is the size. It is so lightweight, when I reach down to pick it up without thinking I almost fling it in the air, as I'm accustomed to lugging around the nine pound HP. It's nice not to have a shoulder aching after hours in the airport!

Another huge advantage this laptop has over the others is it's battery life. You almost can't drain it. We go for long weekends camping and I still have to keep up with a certain amount of work. Sunday night as we're headed back to town I'm still able to work on the charge I gave it on Thursday.

The screen is bright and crisp with vibrant colors. It comes with a dual layer DVD burner which I haven't tried yet, but look forward to utilizing.

The sound is acceptable but not performance quality. If you have a song you want to turn up and jam to, forget about it. Use headphones, it maximizes volume.

But that's a tradeoff for the small size.

As for the cons... well, the integrated wireless Verizon EV-DO is fantastic in urban areas but completely useless in rural areas. I reach speeds of 600-900 kbps in Tampa, but after leaving town, there is no connection whatsoever. And this is with an additional subscription of $59.99 per month for the wireless service. If you live, work and travel primarily in the city as most do, you'll be thrilled at being able to high-speed surf and send files instantly. If you are rural, check your location coverage BEFORE subscribing.

In summary,I wouldn't leave home without it.
