Unlike my 6 previous laptops- this one WORKS!
Laptops are SUPPOSED to live in a challenging environment- tossed in and out of automobiles and airplanes, banged around and dragged about.
If you just use your laptop as a desktop unit reliability and customer care may not be important to you. But if you use a laptop the way it was INTENDED to be use then your choice of computer is ALL ABOUT reliability and support.
I've owned 6 previous laptops (3 PCs and 3 Macs) and NONE of them was consistently reliable and customer support ranged form non-existent (Acer) to reasonable (Apple).
When it was time for a new laptop I did a lot of research and my focus was on 3 basic issues: reliability, customer support and solid, usable keyboard/display. The IBM T23 consistently was at the top of everyone's list.
I scratched my head when comparing prices/features against "consumer laptops" that were $1100-$1400 for comparable features... but I kept coming back to the question: "Who CARES how cheap it is if it's always in the repair shop!?"
And of course my laptops NEVER failed at home. They ALWAYS failed on the first day of a 2-week business trip. ARGH!
So I took the plunge and spent 50% more for the IBM T23. I've owned it now for 90 days and my grand-daddy was right: "You can't afford to buy something cheap!" The T23 was THE BEST money I've ever spent on a computer and I've owned a BUNCH of them since 1977!!
The keyboard is actually BETTER than either of my desktop machines (one PC and one Mac). The display is outstanding even after several hours.
But here's the bottom line; It's RELIABLE.
Remember Clinton's 1992 compaign strategy: "It's the economy stupid"?
I've concluded that when it comes to laptops: "It's the reliability stupid!"
I don't care WHICH operating system you have, how big the screen is, how fast your processor is, how much ram you've got or how big your hard drive is- if it doesn't work it doesn't matter!
I bought the T23 to be used, used, used. I use it 4-5 hours daily and it has proven as reliable as a brick. Period.
I've only spoken with IBM tech support once for a minor question early on- but the wait times were quick and the help was exemplary. (Note- If I hear "your call IS important to us, please remain on the line" or "due to unusually high call volume we are experiencing a delay" one more time I'm going to SCREAM!)
So like I said... if you want to brag about all the great features you got and how little you paid- but an HP, Compac, Gateway or whatever.
If you actually NEED a laptop and actually USE a laptop and if it would actually be a significant inconvenience in your life to be withOUT your laptop- just do it (to quote Nike). Just buy the T23.
You can thank me later.
