Pros: inexpensive, lots of storage space
Cons: sold only at IKEA, must buy slatted mattress base, made mostly of particleboard
When we bought our new IKEA mattress last month, we also decided to abandon the whole box spring thing and just buy a bed base at the store while we were at it. We wandered around the display literally for an hour comparing various beds, but ultimately we decided on the IKEA Brimnes Bed Frame with Drawers.
About This Product
The IKEA Brimnes Bed Frame with Drawers is exactly what it sounds like: a bed frame with 4 large storage drawers underneath. We bought the queen size in an IKEA store for $249. It comes with the required mid-beam but you do have to select and purchase a slatted base to use with this bed. There also is a sharp-looking Brimnes headboard that you can use with this product, but we didn't have the extra money or space in the truck to buy it. This bed frame is plain white in color and with very simple handles and details. I'm all about plain, simple, and neutral decor that fits into my beach-themed house and this Brimnes Bed Frame works well with my preferences.
This bed base consists mostly of particleboard. It comes in a large box that contains dozens of pieces, about a hundred screws/bolts/connectors, and a 50-step instruction manual that consists entirely of pictures. The box just barely fit into our Toyota 4Runner, so if you don't have a large SUV you will likely have to have it shipped to your home. (or you could rent a U-Haul if you are planning a huge shopping spree like one of my friends did)
It was a very long day by the time we got home on New Year's Day. The IKEA store is over an hour away, we were tired from the festivities the night before, the store was super-crowded and very hot, and then we wasted a lot of time driving around the area trying to find somewhere to grab lunch/dinner. By the time we got home at 6pm, I was totally exhausted and ready for bed. If we had been thinking clearly, we would have just waited to start the project the next day, but we weren't so we didn't. We dragged the old mattress, box spring, and bed frame out of the bedroom and the new latex mattress and box of bed frame parts into the house.
My husband then spent 2.5 hours assembling the bed frame while I napped on the couch. He put the basic bed together, the tracks for the pull-out drawers, and then installed the slatted base, put the mattress on top and put linens on the bed. He saved the drawer assembly and installation for the next day which took him about another hour or so. I should point out that my husband is extremely handy with this kind of stuff, so a 4 hour assembly for him might translate to 6-8 hours for other people who aren't particularly experienced in this area. I'm hopeless at that kind of stuff, so it probably would have taken me a week to get the IKEA Brimnes Bed Frame together.
The first thing my husband said after finally getting this bed frame all together was "I give this thing a year and then it will fall apart". He wasn't impressed with the fact that it is made mostly of particle board and that some of the connections seemed to be flimsy. He has a dresser that his parents bought from IKEA years ago that is still in perfect condition, but he said that the pieces that make up this Brimnes Bed simply aren't as durable as the ones in the dresser.
I love having the four large drawers under the bed. We live in a small house and storage is always an issue. I can now keep extra bed linens and blankets in the drawers which allowed me to give away the hope chest that we had at the end of the bed. I was tired of trying to maneuver around it in the dark to get to the bathroom and I literally have calcium deposits on my shins from the hundreds of times that I walked into the corners. I also can store extra bath towels in the drawers which helps me to save space in the bathroom closet for other items. The extra storage space is a huge bonus for us and I am very happy to have it.
We had a 5 year old cat who was pulled from a woodpile as a 4 week old feral kitten and he always had that feral fear instinct. Retreating under the bed was his signature move whenever anyone approached him or he was frightened. Bringing this bed into the house would have either caused him to have a nervous breakdown or forced him to get over his fear. Unfortunately, he suffered from a saddle thrombus (blood clot that causes hind-end paralysis) a couple of months ago and I had to put him down. I like to think that it would have helped him to get over his issues, but we'll never know for sure.
After a month and a half of using this IKEA Brimnes Bed Frame with Drawers, it is still in excellent condition and hasn't yet started to fall apart as my husband predicted. I certainly will be updating this review in the future if we do see it breaking down over time. In all honesty, if it starts to fall apart after a year I will be disappointed but not shocked or angry because we paid only $250 for this bed frame. It isn't like we spent thousands of dollars on this thing.
We are very happy with our IKEA Brimnes Bed Frame. It has added extra storage space in this small house and it holds the divine new latex mattress that has been giving us the best nights of sleep that we've had in years. I hope to add the matching headboard in the future because it not only looks sharp, but it also adds even more storage space for things like books, inhalers, tissues, remote controls, or whatever you'd keep on nightstands. So far so good with this bed frame!
