IMSI Master Clips 303000

Pros:A huge collection of clip art for most any imaginable application.

Cons:Even though the search tools are good, it is cumbersome to work with 20 CD's.

The Bottom Line: If you use clip art, this is a massive collection of many types in many formats. You may even attach sound to some of the images. A good resource.

If one picture is worth 1000 words, how much is a 303,000-picture collection worth? If you said $69.95, you are correct, because that is the suggested retail price of this massive 20 CD-ROM image library. There are photos, clip art, videos, animations, sounds, fine art, web art and more included in this set. There is truly something for everyone.

Let’s get down to specifics, the 20 CD-ROMs contain:

Over 125,200 WMF vector images
Over 47,200 TIFF art images
Over 14,100 JPG high resolution photos
Over 43,000 JPG medium resolution photos
2,100 JPG MasterPhoto objects
Over 57,800 Web Art graphics in GIF format
2.000 TrueType fonts
20 video and animation films
500 sound and music effects
16,300 fine art images

For those who may not have the utilities needed to display edit or move these objects, the following are provided:

Master Clips Browser—a utility to find, view, catalog and copy image files.
Master Clips Font Installer—Install, view and print MasterClips TrueType fonts.
MasterClips Sound Controller—Play and attach WAV files to Windows events and e-mail.
1st Design Clip Art Editor—Edit or create vector images.

Just how do you learn to use such a mass of goodies? There is a Quick Tour video included that leads you by the hand through the process of using the system, finding an image and viewing thumbnails. There is also a telephone book-like manual that contains all of the images in full color, sorted by category and giving a CD number and id number so that you may go directly to the image. A second smaller manual, (User Guide) gives installation and operational instructions in a very easy to follow, well-illustrated format. There is also a tabulation of the subjects covered in each of the 20 CD’s. The most practical tool is the MasterClips Browser. This utility displays a screen that has a Speedbar/Toolbar on top, where each of the CD’s is represented by an icon. The icon shows the number of Library files in each CD. For example, if you have CD 1 in your drive, just double click its icon and you will see 7 additional icons appear on the main screen. Each of these represents a category. The categories on CD1 are Animals, Borders, Cartoons, Designs, Foods, Holidays and Home. Double click the category of interest, say, Animals and you are presented with 9 icons representing the following sub-categories, Birds, Domestic, Wild, Cartoon, Cats and Dogs, Extinct, Insects, Reptiles and Underwater. Double click on any of the sub-category icons and you will be shown thumbnail views of all the graphics in this collection. Double clicking any thumbnail enlarges the image to near full screen. The toolbar allows you to search the thumbnails or copy them to another location. You could also choose to edit the image before transferring it.

There is another method to find a particular image. The Keyword Search Engine acts very much as an Internet Browser. You type your keyword into the window, select your search parameters and off you go! The search may be across the entire collection or within a given CD. The target CD does not have to be in the drive for this process, but obviously must be mounted prior to actually retrieving an image.

The minimum system requirements are modest, 386 CPU, Windows 3/1/95/98, 8 MB RAM, 10 MB hard drive space, a CD-ROM drive and a Sound Blaster Compatible sound card. My Pentium 233 with 64M RAM, running under Windows 98 was an overkill, and the installation was flawless. I ran the Quick Tour and all became crystal clear. I was then able to search, locate, retrieve and print any desired image. The learning time was less than 15 minutes.

MasterClips 303,000 is a product of IMSI and more information on this and their entire product line may be found at their web site, www.imsisoft.com.

Anyone using graphics will find this a tremendous collection, that is easy to use, at a very reasonable price. The 20 CD’s are packaged in a nice folder that has a slot for each CD and a large, printed directory of the contents of each CD.
