Pros: Simple setup and operation. Relatively cool and quiet. Price is great.
Cons: No One-touch button. Have to lay flat and can't stand up vertically.
The Bottom Line: It is a great buy (with rebate) for a simple external hard drive. Nothing fancy but it works well. Fast USB 2.0 connection.

My PC crashed and lost some valuable data. Also I have got a new laptop. I tell myself I need some kind of backup for my personal and business data, as well as digital pictures and legally purchased digital music. As I researched, I noticed almost polarized opinions on external hard drive regardless brand and size. One concern is it can crash and lose data too. My co-worker reminded me and made a good point. He said the point here is to have a second copy. Nothing is bullet proof in terms of storage. So I bought this 160 GB Iomega hd for $69 after rebate.
My concern is the data files, not the OS or applications that I can reinstall. Therefore I didn't use the backup software the package came with and I can't comment on it. There is no One-Touch backup button on the unit. I basically just hook the drive up through USB 2.0 and Windows sees it right away with a drive letter. I manually copy the data over. With USB 2.0 it is very fast. I have used it with USB 1.1. It works but much slower. There is also an ON/OFF switch at the back. The two green LED lights tell you the On/OFF and Activity.
Inside the enclosure, it is a Western Digital drive. The drive will be only slightly warm after being on for a few hours and it is quiet. It seems to be using its metalic body to release the heat as there is no fan or opening. When I have to carry the unit between office and home occasionally, I put it back in the original retail box with its packing material.
I have it for about a month. I am happy about it for now, but only time can tell as for any hard drive. I hope I don't get one with hidden defect.
