miltapher's Full Review: Apple iPod shuffle 2nd Generation (1 GB) MP3 Playe...
I am someone who rockets through MP3 players. I have had more mp3 players than cell phones. Mostly because I lose them, but some of them break. All the ones who broke were made by Apple.
Other Apple mp3 players I owned was the Ipod video, a newer mini and one of those older chubby click wheel models. After the hoopty Ipod video I thought I would never own another. I spent a lot of time driving it back to the Apple store. The thing was in the shop more than my late model Blazer. Well, at least they have one year warranties. My secondhand mini died past warranty but it was not in my possession for very long. I actually loved my original older Ipod with no video features the best. Apple should remake it for people who don't want all the bells and whistles. It was regretfully stolen after 2 years of hardcore use.
The other brands I had were the Microsoft Zune and a lot of those cheap Creative Labs mini models. I had a few models of those small Zens. These would probably be the closest to the Shuffle. The rival Zune was good too and had a better screen than the Apple version. Lost it snowboarding. Somebody got lucky that day, I never found it.
Now about the Shuffle. I totally cut Apple off after owning an Ipod video. The only reason I obtained a shuffle was due to First Bank. They gave them to new customers for opening Bank Accounts. Even though it was my despised MP3 manufacturer I accepted the little thingy. It's real tiny and holds 2 gigs of music. 2 gigs is sparse these days, but it's a good amount for snowboarding or other activities. I used this machine primarily while riding my snowboard. Changing the music often is a must, 2 gigs gets old. The only way to do that other than getting a second market program is to use Apple's I tunes. Kinda annoying considering my use of Creative Lab's Zen. The Zens work with out putting software on your computer. They don't force their software on you. Apple does this and also attempts to take over the music formats with their MP4 format. MP4 does not work with a lot of MP3 players. I think it's on purpose, those Nazis.
Despite the forced use of software I think the Ipod Shuffle is better than a cheaper Creative Zen. For one it crashes much less than a Zen and has a clip. I have not lost my shuffle either. I think it's on the account of the little clip. I clip it inside my snowboard jacket and that's easier than remembering to zip up my pocket. Almost all of my lost Mp3 players fell out of unzipped pockets from my snowboard jacket. The clip can be attached to a lot of applications, including jeans. I even clipped it to my mountain bike's cables before and it did not fall off. I still own this Shuffle and have not been to the Apple store either.
The Shuffle is more expensive than the other small players, but it works great. It's worth shelling out more money for. I hate the Apple Store but, it is easy to warranty. Apple will replace your player for up to a year. All you have to do is go into the shop and stand in line. Better than shipping it somewhere and quicker.
The other thing I hate about Apple is their I Buds. Those are terrible and only come in one size. I think they are about as comfortable as stepping on a tack. I don't use them and use SkullCandy ear buds. Skullcandy's buds come with different size rubber ear pieces.
This player may be the last one I ever get, I hope. I could lose it.
