| penguinman's Full Review: ITECH Jock Regular |
Well, as anyone who has the stones (hah!) to play rough and tumble sports will tell you, a good jock and cup is the first and last thing off your body. My ITECH jock has seen use in ice hockey, street hockey, and baseball, so it's pretty well worn in and very comfortable. I move with it on like it's not there, so I don't have to weigh the advantage of protection with the disadvantage of less mobility, which is a very, very good thing.
With mobility comes a tradeoff, of course. In 90% of cases, the cup is going to protect your Prized Possessions completely. The bad news is that another 8% or so of the time, you are going to feel that shot. Usually I get that if it happens to glance off the side of the plastic cup and hit my thigh; the force of the cup being blasted to one side hurts the boys. It's the other 2% that I discovered last night.
I play hockey in a no check league both at college and at home. Like all no check leagues, there's a ton of stickplay maneuvering, and hitting, no checking be damned. The other night I was reintroduced to an extremely bad feeling: the stick up the legs. After perching on a post for a little bit too long, a defenseman took offense, put his stick between my legs from behind, and yanked up as hard as he could. Due to the design of the cup, the plastic was pushed forward and up, allowing the shaft of the stick to contact my own boys and shaft. The following five minutes were spent on the bench curled over in pain. That said, I don't know of any cups that protect from that kind of hit.
The other complain lies in the velcro: it's great until it gets clogged with fuzz, but the other problem is that the flaps that close are completely useless and get in the way. I cut mine off to make my life easier.
