| fazer's Full Review: Lung Cheng, Jackie Chan, Jeff Yang - I Am Jackie C... |
For the millions and millions of fans of Jackie Chan around the world, "I am Jackie Chan" basically answers every question you could possibly have about his beginnings. Instead of talking about his mega-hits he talks about his very humble beginnings in Hong Kong. His parents had to put him in a Chinese Drama Academy(opera school) because they couldn't afford to keep him. His grueling training at the drama school made Jackie who he is today and gave him the ability to do the crazy stunts in his movies. Jackie goes through the several love interests he had and the one he got married to. He recaps his first two horrible outings to America and the baloney it produced "The Big Brawl" and "The Protector". The beginning of the book deals mainly with his time in the drama academy and can get a little slow, but it is worth it. We learn about his humble beginnings as a lowly stunt man. The book does not go in depth into his more recent films though. He goes chronologically up until the mid 1980's then he begins to wrap the book up.
Overall, the book is a Chan fan's dream. You learn everything about his life and his relationship with Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. The paperback also adds an extra chapter that showcases his thoughts on "Rush Hour"'s success. You also get a few glimpses on his upcoming projects. There is also a great gift at the end of the book. Chan rates his top 10 fights, top 10 stunts, and all his injuries. Each stunt, fight, and injury has a caption by Jackie describing what made it so great or hurt so much. Finally there is a filmography that shows ever movie he was ever involved in any way. This book is excellent and a great read. It is hard to put down.
