This is a great book. Normally I don't go for autobiographies much, just because, if I had to write one about my life...I don't think it'd make any bestseller lists. I mean, 75-80% of my life has got to be something like, "Wake up, go to work, go to class, eat dinner, sleep." (Ok...well, maybe not that "go to class" part.)
Jackie, however, has had a few more mishaps and adventures than I. Getting his now phenomenal movie career just off the ground was something, and once that got started, the troubles didn't stop either.
The book is written just after he finished shooting "Who Am I?" which is running currently on cable. It's a pretty awesome movie. The first time I saw the HK version in a local Chinese supermarket, I almost didn't recognize Jackie, because he's got African headresses and dark skin makeup all over him...I double taked, and I figured it out. Anyway, his mentor has just passed away, and he felt the need to reflect upon life, he's lived a lot of it and has a lot to share.
The main theme that seems to run through Jackie's book, and consequently, his life is that pride, hard work, and kindess will get you through life on top. There are several occasions where Jackie does a film, or does a favor for someone else because they need it. He did one film, just so a stuntman association could have enough money to get started. All profites went to them. He did other movies for people for personal favors. This is THE biggest movie star in the world...doing a film for a friend, just because. That'd be like Jordan showing up to play a benefit for your local college team because someone loaned him a pair of shoes once.
There are many times in the book where it seems bleak for our hero, but time and good fortune never cease to go his way, and he manages to pull himself out. And he never forgets how lucky he is. He makes sure to be that windfall for other people. He also shows his hard work to take the opportunities once they present themselves, and to make the most of them...no matter how painful they may be.
One surprise in the book, though, is that he's married. Jackie's never really talked about his wife before, but he talkes about her his kids, and relationships he had before. It's a glimpse into his life that you don't often get to see, so if not for anything else, pick this book up for that alone. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Go out and pick it up today.
