Simple Messages of Love from the Great Communicator
Written: Sep 19 '01
Pros:Like rummaging through a shoe box full of love letters to Nancy from her husband.
Cons:If you don't like the Reagans, you probably won't find this very interesting.
The Bottom Line: As you read, you will feel as though you have been invited to sift through a box of Ronnie's love letters to Nancy.
When one first begins reading the letters in I Love You, Ronnie, one can't help but be amazed by Nancy Reagan's willingness to share with the world the most private messages documenting the love she shared with her husband. Moreover, one is also impressed that any woman would go public with love letters in which she is routinely addressed as "Nancy Poo Pants," "Mommie Poo," and "Nancy Pants." I think I speak for most women in America when I say that I would have kept those letters private!
Yet Nancy Reagan is not just any woman. She is the former first lady and selflessly allows the public to read these intimate love notes so that we might better understand the man she has loved for most of her life, former President Ronald Reagan. She is right. Much is revealed about Reagan through these letters. His sense of humor, his love for his wife and children, his self-deprecating nature are all apparent.
The letters begin before the Reagan's marriage in 1952 and continue throughout their days in Hollywood, in the Governor's mansion, in the White House and beyond. There are letters written for special occasions such as anniversaries and Valentine's Day, and letters written when the Reagans were separated due to job or political obligations. Few men are as devoted to their wives as Ronald Reagan was to Nancy. He may have boldly demanded that the Soviets tear down the Berlin Wall, but to Nancy he was unfailingly a gentle and loving husband.
It is certainly fun to spend an afternoon rifling through Nancy's letters!
