About 5 years ago I was up in the attic searching through all my Dad's old books. In the many boxes I found several books authored by Isaac Asimov. At the time I was not real familiar with his books, I only knew of what I had heard and read in other places. Had I known that these books were up there, I would have started reading them long ago!
I gathered as many as I could carry downstairs with me and sorted through them. Many were his essays and books on scientific theories and such. I've not been too big into that, but I saved them because I may read them sometime in the future. The books I was interested in most were the robot stories and novels.
I chose a book to read first and it turned out to be "I, Robot". I laid down with this book and didn't emerge until I finished the entire book in one sitting. I was captivated from the moment I opened it and there was no way I was going to put it down.
Isaac Asimov was not only brilliant but he knew his robotic world well. Many books I've read by other authors I can spot inconsistencies and things that are overlooked, but I can't find anything unexplained or untouched in Asimov's writing. He wrote beautifully.
So much so that each story drew me into the scene. So perfectly written that I felt like I was standing as witness to the events that occurred in each tale.
I could feel the deep despair and pain that Gloria felt when she lost her play mate. I could feel the anger, rage and frustration that Susan Calvin did with the mind reading robot. I could have been those characters.. and that is just part of what makes Asimov's writing so captivating!
Since that night I've read this book many many times. This book has seen better days, the cover is torn, folded and worn. The rest of the book shows this as well. It was this way when I got it. Someone else enjoyed it as much as I have. :)
I've gone out and bought many more books of Isaac Asmov's since then. I'm sure some day I'll get around to writing reviews of them too, for they are all so good! This book was responsible for drawing me into the world of Asmovian robots. "I, Robot" will always have a special place in my collection.
