A very good Electric Bike

Written: Jan 16 '08 (Updated Apr 06 '10)
Pros:Foldable and very compact. Electric power.  Almost like a moped.
Cons:Slow. A little heavy, but expected.   Expensive.
The Bottom Line: Update:  After more than 2 years, this bike has held up quite nicely Battery life has not diminished much (7-8% loss) and nothing has failed.  Fun factor is still there.

This is my second electric bike from the same company (Curie).

QUALITY (8/10): This iZip EZGO is very good compared to other foldable bikes. The frame is thicker (heavier) but well worth needed for the instant torque generated by the motor.  I rode this bike into a wooded trail.  Don't do this. It's not made for such rough trails and may bend the rims.

The parts are not high quality, but good quality. Because obviously, much of what you're paying is for the motor and battery.

Another concern would be the latch handles. Try to hold them as close to the base as possible when opening and closing them as they may break and you'll end up needing a pair of plyers to operate them.  There's no signs of these breaking after 2 years so far compared to other cheap ones from other folding bikes that I've seen break.

SAFETY (7/10):  Another thing that worries me about folding bikes is that....they fold. What if it folds while I'm riding it down a steep hill? After inspecting it, I think I'll be ok as long as I don't start messing around on unpaved trails and such to weaken or damage the joints.  It's holding up well after 2 years.

BRAKES (7/10):  The stopping power is OK.  You won't be going that fast anyway unless you're going down a very steep hill.

MOTOR (8/10) & BATTERY (7/10):  The motor is hardly noticeable as it's the hub design on the rear wheels.  Battery life is very good.  As long as you recharge it after every use and even recharge it when it's sitting during the winter (to retain its capacity according to the manual).

PERFORMANCE (7/10): The iZip only have one speed so it's not very fast, but it's not meant to be a fast bike.

PORTABILITY (10/10):  Good as a convenience bike for short trips, spur of the moment biking (when it's already in your trunk), etc. I can't fit bike racks (nor want to) on my car.  This bike fits nicely in the back seat, front seat or trunk. I can go to the city and take it out and ride it around like a moped. The noise that the motor makes is  hardly noticeable.

WEIGHT (8/10):  It's not that heavy even with the motor. But with the battery it is very heavy. Although going uphill with this extra weight plus electric assist, it's still much easier than a regular bike. You can also pedal like a regular bike w/o using the electric power. It's nice to twist the throttle though and cruise home if you're too tired.

ATTENTION GETTER: (9/10): It draws a lot of attention.

UPDATE:  After more than 2 years, this bike is still holding up well.  No problems whatsoever.  Just little squeeks and rattles when hitting bumps. I rode it through wooded trails that weren't even mountain bike trails, so that was bad and may have greatly contributed to the squeeks.  This is purely a road bike. Battery life has not diminished more than 7-8% it seems.
