I picked up Lizzy from the animal shelter about five months ago. She was a small energetic 3-month-old Golden Retriever/Lab mix. I fell in love with her right away and wanted only the best for her.
I began my search for the best dog food. Since Goldens are prone to have hip problems caused by poor development of the hip joint, it was important to find a food that would prevent this condition as much as possible. I did lots of research. I asked my friends who owned dogs which brands they liked. I called the vet and asked for recommendations. The vet suggested Iams, Eukeneuba, or Science Diet.
I chose Iams. I liked that the key ingredients were chicken and cornmeal and most importantly Iams offered a large breed puppy variety for puppies that will be greater than 50 pounds at adulthood. This variety helps the puppies maintain a moderate growth rate to minimize problems. It promotes healthy skeletal development. This was very important, as I wanted to reduce the risk of Lizzy developing hip problems, or any other problems for that matter.
I also chose this Iams dry food over other wet food because dry food is good for supporting healthy puppy teeth; it is easier, and usually less expensive.
Lizzy has been eating Iams for five months and both of us are pleased with the results. Lizzy is energetic, has a shiny coat, clean white teeth, and I wont go into all the details and description about her bowel movements, but lets just say she has no problem in that department.
Lizzy also loves the taste of Iams. I had no problem at the beginning getting her to eat her food. I was a little worried because I was not feeding her what the shelter had been feeding her, but she ate the food the first day I brought her home.
Although some people argue that Iams is more expensive than other brands, I would rather spend a little extra money to know that my puppy is getting the nutrients that she needs. I also frequently find coupons in the paper for $1 off.
Iams is very convenient as well. I can find it at our local grocery store (HEB). Its also at Wal-Mart and Target which repeatedly have sales on Iams as well.
Overall, Lizzy and I both highly recommend Iams Large Breed Puppy food. Although slightly more expensive, it is well worth the price.
