Pros: Low in Magnesium and Ash. Salmon is predominant ingredient.
Cons: Apathetic response from some of my cats.
Protein sources other than salmon. included.
The Bottom Line: If you need a low ash cat food, and have a cat that prefers fish, this may work for your cat. Try the 3 oz. size first.

| patriciak's Full Review: Iams Salmon Formula Cat Food |
I use wet food as a treat, for weight gain, post-operatively (dental), and for one cat who has chronic cystitis. This gives me an occasion to deal with one fussy cat, a sometimes fussy oldster who just isn't eating well, then a diva who loves wet food, usually any wet food. My review is based on this variety of response.
Iams Salmon Formula Cat Food is formulated for Adult cats, and comes in three sizes, 3 oz., 6 oz. and 13 oz. can. Both the 3 oz. and 6 oz. can have an easy-open pop-top. The label is Iams distinctive orange label with a contrasting rich pink band for the top 1/2 inch of the label, highlighting the name of the food. This particular formula is "Slow-Cooked with Broth",described as complete and balanced for an adult cat, and states it is "formulated to meet nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Profiles for maintenance.". The food is 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed.

The Can is Opened
I was pleasantly surprised, to notice a distinct, though not overpowering smell of Salmon. The food has ground texture, with a slight bit of broth noticed as the food is spooned out (it is the consistency of chopped liver pate), color is non-descript light tan.
Taste Test Results
Lyra (my American Curl with chronic cystitis) sniffed at the food and walked away. To be fair, I set this up as a two food comparison test. In the other bowl, was 9Lives Gourmet Meals in Flaked Tuna Entree in Broth flavor. A food I will review once that product is available for review here on Epinions. She had eaten the 9Lives fairly well, so may just have been full.
Patrick (my oldest American Curl who at 15 is the senior "catizen" of the house) will usually eat anything, but he sniffed this food, and walked away. I will be keeping an eye on him today to see if this is simply an "off-his-food" kind of day.
Tyler (who has put back on weight lost during recent health problem, but is still enjoying special food offerings)did not aggressively go after the food, but did eat some of it, and came back for scant seconds.
Alix P. Curl (the "P" is for Princess which really says it all)was most enthusiastic about the food, and dove in, however she did not eat as much as she usually does when she is eating wet food (a rare treat for her, since she is already plump enough!). To me this means the food fails her standards of "good taste".
My Bottom Line
I like the fact that this food is so low in ash and magnesium, and I appreciate that the first two listed ingredients (ingredients in cat food are listed in order of the proportional amount present in a formula)were Salmon. However, I still prefer that my cat foods not be a mix of several protein sources - if its a fish food, I want only fish present, same for a chicken or a beef. As an owner who has sadly had two cats with IBD and had to deal with trying to find a protein source the cats could eat without inflaming their intestines, I don't want my wet food to be such a mish mash of 3-4 proteins. To find out what a cat is allergic to, you have to try a single protein source at a time, checking for a response. That simply rules out use of a food such as this.
Price was reasonable for me, at under 60 cents per can (from Petsmart), and the food is readily available in any pet store, and some grocery stores.
I wish my cats were more enthusiastic about eating it. Any food not completely eaten, must be seen as too expensive, actual price per can aside.
