Quite some time ago, I purchased my 4 year old the Fisher Price Ice Cream Scoops of Fun game for 2 reasons. 1. It was cheap and 2. It's for kids ages 3 and up and I figured he would he get a kick out of the game since ice cream is his all time favorite food. The idea behind Ice Cream Scoops of Fun is to help kids identify colors and pay attention to details so they can match the different ice cream flavors up.
The game comes inside a cardboard tub that is the same shape as round half gallon ice cream tub. The tub itself is heavier than what your basic board games come in, so it can withstand constant abuse from kids. Basic boxes that board games come in usually end up getting torn and then you have pieces falling out which results in upset children who can't play the game because pieces are missing, so at least Fisher Price put some thought behind the design that the game comes in.
Inside your ice cream tub fits a plastic ice cream scoop that is shaped like a real scoop. It even has a button like ice cream scoops have to release the ice cream from the scoop. In this case, when you push the button, the flavors that in the scoop turn to reveal what flavor your child has. The 3 flavors are chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
Also included with the game are 4 cardboard circles that are your ice cream bowls. There is purple, orange, green and blue. There are 16 cardboard circles with 3 ice cream scoops already sitting on them, and then there are another 16 cardboard pieces that are just 3 ice cream scoops sitting alone. These pieces that are sitting alone all have a matching card that is already sitting in a bowl.
Game Play
There are 2 different versions of the game, and it depends on your childs ability on which version you'd want him to play.
One version of the game is each player picks an ice cream sundae bowl (the purple, blue, green or orange bowls), and the 16 plain bowls with ice cream scoops already on them are then dealt out to each player. So if you have 2 players, each player would get 8 of the bowls, if you have 4 players, each player would then only get 4 of the bowls. The player then takes these cards and places them face up in front of him. The 16 cards with just the lone ice cream scoops are put into the tub face down.
One player goes first and scoops the ice cream scoop to see what color it will land on. He then picks out a ice cream scoop card from inside the tub and the object is to see if it matches one of your already made ice cream bowls. If it does, that player yells "Ice Cream" and takes the card and puts it in their bowl. The game ends when there are no more ice cream cards in the tub and the player with the most ice cream cards wins the game.
The other version of the game is almost like the above version except the 16 cards of scoops already in the bowls are dealt face up in front of everyone. When the player takes an ice cream scoop from inside the tub, the first player to see the match of that card yells "Ice Cream" and gets to take the card and put it in his bowl. This version is more advanced since you have to look at 16 cards to find the match instead of just looking at your own cards you were dealt in the beginning of the game.
Ice Cream Scoops of Fun was a big hit in our house the first few times we played it. My son got very bored with the game and has more fun just arranging the cards all face down and playing his own memory game with them. At least the plastic ice cream scooper gets played with since he loves to pretend he is serving ice cream and will make believe he is making these grand ice cream sundaes with his scooper.
I would not recommend Ice Cream Scoops of Fun for children 4 years and older. Its better suited for kids ages 2 and 3 years of age.
