Pros:Cordless, motion detector works well, bright light (for small area)
Cons:Motion sensor and light swivel together, no awareness of low-light condition
The Bottom Line: I like this product. It solved my specific problem quite well. However, it does have some flaws that make it less than ideal for other situations.
Our house came with a wonderful feature. A huge, walk-in linen closet in the master bath. We added a bunch of extra shelving, and use that closet to store - well - everything. But the builders did something stupid. They failed to give us a light in this closet. And, tucked into a corner, away from the window, there is simply no way to get light in there using natural light or the bathroom's other fixtures. Trying to find something specific in that closet - especially at night - was always difficult.

We've tried various lighting solutions over the years, but the best by far is from Ideaworks: The Motion Activated Cordless Light with 7 LED Bulbs. This product is designed for either outdoor or indoor use. It provides a cordless way to have a motion-activated light come on. Outdoors, it is ideal for lighting pathways and doorways exactly when light is needed - when someone's walking by. Indoors, it solves our linen closet problem. But can also be used for laundry rooms, dark hallways, even inside cabinets. Any place that can use a little extra light, but not all the time - only when someone's there.
You can use this product in three different ways. Hang it on a wall using the three screws provided. Or, use double-stick tape, also provided. Or, simply set it on a shelf or table-top. The light's base is a 5" circle. Using the light's 360 degree swivel, aim the motion sensor so that it "sees" someone coming and aim the light so that it's not in anyone's eyes. (Trust me on this last point - this is a BRIGHT light!) For doorways and pathways, aim the light downward. In the closet, we set the light on a shelf on one side, and aim the light towards the other side. This way the entire closet is lit, without having light shine in anybody's eyes.
The fact that the light swivels in all directions is perfect for getting the exact lighting effect you want. What I don't like is that the light and the motion sensor swivel together. Therefore you have to make compromise between where you want the light to shine, and where you want to aim the motion sensor. It would have been so much better if the two could move independently. After all, you want the sensor to have the best chance of seeing movement approaching, while you might want the light to shine up, straight down, or to the side. But since the two items move together, you basically have to just do the best you can to achieve the desired result.
The motion detector has worked perfectly for us - 100% of the time. They say the "eye" has a 90 degree range, and can see up to 10 feet. Our tests show those specs to be accurate. We have it set so that the closet's door is well within the sensor's 90 degree vision range. As soon as the door starts to open, the sensor "sees" the motion and the light comes on. (It's kind of like a refigerator - open the door, and the light comes on!) For hallways, it would be a benefit to have a wider range of vision, but for our closet, it's fine.
The light comes from 7 bright LED bulbs in a 3" circular pattern. It's very bright when shone directly at an object. But for lighting large areas it might be considered a bit weak. In other words, for large hallways and long pathways, I suggest using multiple lights spread out. But for our closet, the amount of light is just perfect. The light stays on as long as there is motion detected, and for about 20 seconds after. This means that we occasionally have to wave our hands at it to re-light it.
Note that this light does not recognize the existing light in the area. It comes on when it sees motion whether it's a dark or bright light condition. I know that other motion sensors are "smart enough" to come on only when the surrounding area is dark, but not this one. This one will light your walkway, even if it's a bright sunny day.
The light comes in three colors - white, bronze, and black. Its compact size makes it unobtrusive, no matter where you place it. It uses 4 AA batteries, and we were able to buy two for $18. One keeps our closet well-lit so we can find what we're looking for. The other was tossed in our garage, just to help light the way when we walk through there. Have a dark spot in or around your home? Don't have an outlet nearby? Give the Ideaworks: The Motion Activated Cordless Light with 7 LED Bulbs a try.
