Pros: The kids will love it!
Cons: You may have to read it on a daily basis.
The Bottom Line: Terrific book for children with short attention spans, 1st/2nd grade reading level, even the kids may figure out how greedy this little mouse is.

| DnJisJRE's Full Review: Laura Joffe Numeroff - If You Give a Mouse a Cooki... |
I had heard of this book for quite a while before I actually bought it. I volunteer in the elementary school, mostly in younger grades and slower reading groups. It is very popular among these teachers.
If You Give A Mouse A Cookie was written by Laura Joffe Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond. Ms. Bond's pictures are wonderful and simple-not a lot of background, just wonderful detail of the page's main idea.
The book is about 30 pages long and most pages have only one or two sentences. Most of the words are fairly simple. I would guess this is a late-in-the-year first grade reading ability. The paper is normal paperback paper and the cover is the normal thicker paper. Kids can easily tear this thing up, but I doubt they will want to. I bought through the Scholastic Book order from school. It cost 95 cents, so I didn't expect a lot. (How can anyone pass up those 95 cent bargains?!?!)
The story begins with a boy sitting on a rock in front if his home offering a mouse a cookie. The narrator then tells us (the audience) everything that will happen when the mouse accepts the cookie: first, he will want a glass of milk. When you give him that, he will want a straw, then a napkin. Then he needs bigger things-a mirror to see if he has a milk mustache, nail scissors to trim his shaggy hair he noticed while looking in the mirror. You get the idea. One thing leads to another. I have 3 girls 10, 8, and 4. They have all concluded this guy is never happy with anything! And they would NOT like to have him over.
They have all really like it and all for different reasons. The oldest enjoys reading it to her little sister then coming up with her own stories (Laura Numeroff has actually written at least 2 others just like this-If You Give A Moose a Muffin and If You Give A Pig A Pancake). The middle one likes reading it because (besides it is a good book) it is her reading level and since there are so few words on each page, she can get done with it quickly. The youngest simply LOVES it! She has had it read to her so many times, she can "read" it to herself. She even has most of the lines memorized, so it really appears as if she is reading it!
This is a wonderful, simple book for younger kids. Enjoy!
