| DnJisJRE's Full Review: Laura Joffe Numeroff - If You Give a Pig a Pancake... |
Well, I guess when the formula works, you stick with it. Laura Numeroff lost the "Joffe" as a middle name, but kept the same premise of the book. If you read 'If You Give A Mouse A Cookie', you essentially have read 'If You Give A Pig A Pancake' and 'If You Give A Moose A Muffin'.
That said, kids LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these books! They love reading them, listening to them, and creating their own stories just like them.
This time up, a little girl offers a pig a pancake. The pig needs syrup to go with it. Since she gets all sticky, she needs to take a bath, then bubbles to go in the bath, then toys, and so it goes. The little girl runs around trying to get the pig everything the pig wants, while the pig makes a mess all over her house. Like the mouse in the first story, the pig is never satisfied. And again, kids absolutely love it!
As I said, it was written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond. Ms. Bond also illustrated 'If You Give A Mouse A Cookie', and it is done in the same manner. The pictures are wonderful. Perhaps it is because I have an ADHD child (too much "stuff"=confusion), but I like this simple, to-the-point idea. While there is no background, the picture gives great detail of that particular page.
This was another one of my Scholastic book order cheapies. The book was 95 cents, but I splurged and bought the cassette tape that went with it-all for about $ 3.00. If you run across this deal and have young ones, I strongly suggest getting the tape also. The book is read by David Hyde Pierce (Niles from "Frazier"). It includes a couple of dances: in one, you pretend to flip the pancakes. The other is the Piggy Polka. In it, you need to know your left from your right. In case you do not know them, he gives you a good way to learn. When we go on long drives, I always make sure I bring this tape!
The book really is a very good book for younger children. It is only about 30 pages long. With only one sentence on most pages, it is great for kids with short attention spans. The words are slightly difficult-I would say a second grade level. At our school, this collection of books are very popular for kids that have a harder time learning to read or are bored easily.
