DnJisJRE's Full Review: Laura Joffe Numeroff and Teresa Mlawer - Si Llevas...
Anyone that has read the other "If You..." Laura Numeroff stories (If You Give a Pig a Pancake', If you Give a Moose a Muffin', etc.) has read the basic premises of this story. And any kid that has read those stories KNOWS he/she will love this one as well.
'If You Take a Mouse To School' begins with the mouse going to school with you. He will need supplies, try a little math and science before working with the clay and blocks. While waiting for the bus, he keeps busy playing soccer, shooting baskets, and skateboarding. When he settles down to take a breath, he realizes he left the lunchbox back in the classroom, so of course, you wind up having to take him back to school.
This is a great story to get someone ready for kindergarten in September as the book talks about all the fun things that happen at school.
The series of books is very popular with the kids at our school. I work in the AR room and I think nearly every 1st or 2nd grader within this reading level has taken at least one "If You.." book test. I am presuming most schools now have AR testing. If not, for an AR test a child reads a books within his/her "ZPD"-their personal reading level. For example, a 1.3-2.2 means the child reads between a first grade, 3rd month level to a second grade, 2nd month level. In our school and local libraries, books have their reading level labeled on them, so the kids know how hard/easy the book will be for them. If You Take a Mouse To School has a 2.4 reading level and is worth .5 points.
We bought the paperback version through Scholastic Book Club for $1.99. The pages are slightly thicker, so they do not tear easily. The cover is made of thick, glossy paper so it is easy to clean...just in case...
It is written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond as are the others. Ms. Bond does a wonderful job as always, making the pictures colorful, not too cartoonish, and with a lot of detail for the kids. Even though this is a short book (28 pages) with only 1-2 sentences on most pages, because of the "grown-up" illustrations, kids feel like they are reading a "real" book.
I work with helping kids to read at an elementary school, so obviously, just about anything that gets a child to read I am all for. This is DEFINATELY one series that kids love to read and have read to them! It points out the great things that happen at school-who can forget how exciting it is (at least at this age group) to get new school supplies is in September, playing with blocks and clay or doing science experiments. OK, so the math and spelling words this little guy can do is pretty far out amazing!
I also enjoy reading these books because it leads to some great discussions about how greedy the mouse really is (you'd be amazed how many kids point this out to me! There are a lot of parents out there teaching manners! THANK YOU!). When I ask why he is like that, they know that it is because he is so excited about going to school.
