Located on the Moody Street "strip" of restaurants in Waltham, Iguana Cantina is known for GREAT Margaritas and a good time! This is NOT Tex-Mex food, but more of a "cantina theme" bar and restaurant. There is a patio area out in back that is popular in good weather-and an electric fireplace inside (for those more common foul weather Boston days!) making this a comfy, fun place that is full during weekdays and crowded on weekends. There are 3 locations of Iguana Cantina (Waltham, Framingham and Neeham) which must keep "Iggy" , their "mascot" really busy!
Iguana Cantina offers 8 "Happetizers" ranging in price from $3.95 to $7.95. My personal favorite is "Snake Bites"-pickles jalapenos hand stuffed with tomato and cheese, cornmeal crusted and served with a spicy salsa mayo. In addition to regular (if there is such a thing as "regular" at this place!) The cantina offers a Texas Pu-Pu Platter (go figure!) which is a selection of 4 appetizers for about $5.50 per person, and "Iggy's Favorite Nachos" (prices range from $5.50 to $6.95). The nacho choices feature meat, chicken and vegetarian. I like the fact that they include options for low-fat cheese and low-fat sour cream for the health conscious. Although, if you are health conscious-this really isn't the place for you!
There are 3 choices of soups. One of the newest and most interesting is the Alamo Chicken Soup. These is a spiced chicken and corn chowder for $3.95. Yes, in Boston our chowders include more than clams! There are 4 salad choices ranging in price from $5.50 to $7.95.
The fajitas at Iguana Cantina are one of the house specialties. They have been awarded "Best of Boston" by local magazines! Choices for fajitas include vegetarian, chicken, beef and shrimp. The prices range from $8.95 to $12.95. I have had these several times and they are really good! There are also "fajita-like" choices called the Border Blast (a sampler) Grilled Tilapia (a sweet, white Costa Rican fish) and the Fajita Fantasy (a sampler for 4 or more people).
There is a "South of the Border" selection of burritos, tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas and quesadillas ranging in price from $$7.75 to $$9.50. My personal favorite is the fish tacos which are served with corn and black bean salsa.
There are also 6 choices of sandwiches and "Iggy's Wraps (flour tortilla roll ups) which very in price from $$5.95 to $7.95. Choices include grilled chicken, pulled pork, veggies, tilapia and a club-style and spring roll wrap. All of the sandwiches, wraps, and burgers are served with home made french fries which can be substituted for Spanish rice, vegetarian black beans, refried beans or Jicama cole slaw.
There are also 6 choices of entrees ranging in price from $9.95 to $14.95. Again, the main part of the entrée is either chicken, steak, ribs, pork, or tilapia. The menu has a real sense of humor (as does the restaurant) which is evident in the description of the "Stuffed Iguana Tail" entrée, which has a note that reads "It's really chicken: we would not hurt Iggy!"
Iguana Cantina is a fun place and often crowded. There is a brightly colored mural on the wall and everyone is obviously having a good time. Parking is available on the street, in front, or in a city lot in back. Parking is not usually an issue although on weekend nights you may have to sit a while to get a spot in the lot. The restaurant has a menu that chances fairly frequently so boredom is NOT an issue. The service is fair, not great. They also sell salsas, colorful T-shirts and cowboy hats (for kids) which feature Iggy's likeness. This is not the place to find gourmet food-it is a place for great Margaritas, good food and fun.
