There is one baby toy I've never been able to get rid of, no matter how much I hate it, and it's the Sesame Street Surprise Sounds Play Store. Given as a gift to my now almost-five-year-old daughter, not only do her younger brothers now play with it on a regular basis, but so does she!
::: Can You Tell Me How to Get, How to Get Rid of This Thing? :::
The Sesame Street Surprise Sounds Play Store is an adorable (at first glance) grocery shopping experience for your little one. The register and "scanner" are all one piece, requiring three "AA" batteries that insert in the bottom, right next to the speaker. The cash register features eleven keys: numbers 1 through 9, an Elmo key with a big question mark, and the key to open the cash drawer. At the top, there are three colored lights beneath raised images of Ernie, Big Bird, and Cookie Monster.
Also included with the Sesame Street Surprise Sounds Play Store are play money (two plastic "bills" and four plastic "coins"), a red plastic credit card that swipes through a card reader, a small carrying basket, and five pieces of food: green pickles, red catsup, orange juice, blue cookies, and yellow cheese.
There are two modes of play. The first mode simply tells children what each thing is; press a number button and the register lights up and tells you the number, or place a piece of food on the scanner and it will tell you color and item, such as "That's the red catsup." The second mode is set after you press the Elmo key, and Elmo asks you to press a particular number or find a certain food, like "Find the blue food," or "Find the pickles."
::: Sunny Day, The Day I Chase This Toy Away :::
For starters, this toy lacks an on/off switch, the bane of my existence. Put this in a toy box, and you will constantly hear that insipid Elmo shrieking "Let's look for... the yellow food!" Shut up, Elmo. That leads us to my second problem. When did Elmo get to be so popular? He does most of the speaking on this toy, with the exception of the number, which is spoken by the character above the row. 1, 4, and 7 are Ernie, etc. Also, in the interest of accuracy, WHERE is the zero on this cash register? MISSING! There is NO zero, which confuses me and Beanie, and results in a missed learning opportunity for the kids.
I'm also not sure whether or not you might see this as a problem, but the batteries in here I SWEAR are the originals. I don't ever remember changing them. Maybe my husband did it once, but the batteries DO NOT DIE. And the toy, no matter how hard it is thrown or kicked or stepped on DOES NOT BREAK. I have not been able to kill this toy, no matter how hard I tried. I mean... no matter what the kids have done to it.
I'll leave it to your judgment whether the play value is in the toy itself or how well it annoys Mommy.
