| liquidrezin's Full Review: Image Dynamics ID10 Car Subwoofer |
When most people think cars and bass, they immediately think of BOOM BOOMING cars going down a street. Well for me and probably a lot of people out there the idea of bass is a little different.
When I hear a tight kick of a bass drum, I want to hear everything, not just the low end part of it. I don't like loose booming subs (JL seems to be good at making these).
Enter IDQs. These subs are the BEST value in Sound Quality subs. They can easily be had for well under $150 for a 10" model and they're well worth it. (Incidentally I got a deal and got mine for $80 each :) )
The term "tight as a drum" comes to mind when speaking about the IDQ sound. The bass is VERY musical. Transient response is great on these speakers. Ultra low and mid bass frequencies play well even during complicated transitions in the music.
I cannot say enough about this sub, you just have to hear them. Compare these subs to any other sub in the price range and I can guarantee (at least if you're not deaf) that you'll agree that IDQs are the best sounding sub in the price range. When I say best sounding, I don't mean the loudest, people seem to confuse a good sounding car stereo with a loud car stereo. I can safely say that they sound better than subs that are more expensive.
If you're a true audiophile (true audiophiles want SQ not just SPL) then these are the subs for you. Anything from rap to classical instrumental music sounds wonderful on these transducers.
The only gripe (and I'm really reaching here) is that they don't play as loud as other comparable subs (JL W3s come to mind), but I wouldn't trade the sound quality that IDQs have for the SPL that W3s have.
The 10" model is rated at 250W and you can easily power a pair with a good 400-500W amp. I have a pair powered by a Phoenix Gold XS2500 and they sound so damn clean. My friend who initially bought a JLW3 for his RX7 was totally disappointed with his purchase. I suggested he get an IDQ 10 to replace his JL. He eventually did and he hasn't been happier. He was even going to purchase a new amp for his JL, but after getting the IDQ, he doesn't even think he needs one.
Another great thing about IDQs is that Image Dynamics has great support. I've had a pair of my IDQs replaced because they seemed to be damaged during installation. I brought my receipt and subs to Image Dynamics' headquarters in Torrance, CA and they swapped em for a brand new spankin pair. RJ at Image Dynamics is a great guy, and he even showed me the innards of a couple of their speakers. He's also VERY knowledgable about speakers in general. If a company stands behind their product this much, you know you got something good.
